To ride a moped on public roads, you need a test certificate. To obtain this, you must take a test at the appropriate authority. If you pass the test, the authority will issue you a certificate. You must carry the test certificate with you whenever you ride your moped.
You do not need a test certificate in the following cases:
- You already hold a German driver’s license.
- You hold a foreign driver’s license that is valid in Germany.
Before you are allowed to take the test for the certificate, you must attend an appropriate training course. The following applies:
- The course takes place at an approved driving school.
- The driving instructor must hold a Class A driving instructor’s license.
- After the course, you will receive a certificate from the driving school confirming that you have completed the training.
If you have not yet taken the exam, you may only ride a moped on public roads when accompanied by a driving instructor.
If you are 15 years of age or older, you may ride a moped on public roads. To do so, you must hold a so-called “moped test certificate.” You will receive this after successfully completing both the theoretical and practical moped training and passing the required written exam.
Exception:
You do not need a moped test certificate if you hold a valid German driver’s license of any class or a valid foreign driver’s license that authorizes you to drive motor vehicles in Germany.
In addition, anyone who turned 15 before April 1, 1980, does not need either a driver’s license or a moped test certificate to ride a moped.
