Extending a temporary driving license
Online services
What do I need to know?
Service description
Driving licenses for categories C, CE, C1, or C1E, D, DE, D1, or D1E are issued for a maximum of five years and can be renewed for another five years if the license holder asks for it.
The driver's license authority can extend the validity of a driver's license for truck classes C, C1, CE, C1E, and bus classes D, D1, DE, D1E upon presentation of the relevant evidence.
For commercial use, we can only grant the extension if additional proof of further training for professional driver qualification is provided.
The respective license is issued for a limited period of 5 years (legal maximum).
Application
- Personal appearance required (for identification and signature)
- You should submit your application for a driving license extension in good time (approx. 8 to 10 weeks) before the driving license classes expire. You can apply for the extension
at the earliest 6 months before the driving license classes expire.
Note:
If the validity period of a class has already expired, you can no longer apply for an extension. Legally, this is considered a new issuance ("issuance after expiration"). Please note, however, that the expiration of the validity period means that the grandfathering of the date of issue of the respective driver's license class expires. You may have to retake the driver's license tests if the validity has expired for a long time.
Legal basis
What do I need to bring or submit?
- Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g., identity card, passport)

The certificate can be issued by an ophthalmologist, a company or occupational physician, or a physician from the public health department. An issued report/certificate is valid for 2 years. -
Proof of physical and mental fitness in accordance with the template in Appendix 5 to the Driver's
License Regulation You can have the certificate issued by any doctor. At the time of application, the certificate must not be more than one year old. - In addition, for classes D, D1, DE, and D1E, if you are over 50 years of age, a performance psychology report is required. The certificate must not be more than one year old at the time of application.
- Current biometric photo (size 45x35 mm, portrait format, frontal view), no digital code possible!
Note:
Since May 1, 2025, the rule for passport photos for identity cards and passports is that you must submit a digital passport photo to the registration authority. However, this requirement does not apply to the driver's license authority and therefore does not affect the application for driver's license documents. Please also note that the driver's license authorities do not have the technical equipment to take photos on site. You must therefore submit passport photos in analog form, preferably together with the complete application documents, to the driver's license authority.
- If applicable, proof of basic qualification in accordance with the Professional Driver Qualification Act in goods or passenger transport for commercial purposes on public roads – for the entry of key number 95 after completion of professional driver training
- If applicable, a copy of the index card from the issuing authority (if the previous driver's license was not issued by the Mainz city administration)
To speed up the issuance of the new driver's license, you can request a copy of the index card in advance by telephone from the driver's license authority that originally issued the license.
