The driver's license authority can extend the validity of a driver's license for truck classes C, C1, CE, and C1E upon presentation of the relevant evidence.

For commercial use, you can only apply for an extension if you also submit proof of further training for professional driver qualification.

The respective license is issued for a limited period of 5 years (legal maximum).

Application

• Personal appearance required (for identification and signature)
• You should submit your application for a driver's license renewal in good time (approx. 8 to 10 weeks) before the expiry date of the driver's license classes. You can apply for renewal at the earliest 6 months before the expiry date of the driver's license classes.
  Note: If the validity period of a class has already expired, you cannot apply for renewal. Legally, this is considered a new issue ("issuance after expiration"). Please note, however, that the expiration of the validity period means that the grandfathering of the date of issue of the respective driver's license class expires. Furthermore, it may be necessary to retake the driver's license exams if the validity has expired for a long time.

• The applicant has their primary residence in Mainz.
• You hold a driver’s license for the relevant classes.

• Regulation on the licensing of persons for road traffic (opens in a new tab)
• Sections 3 and 5 of the Professional Driver Qualification Act (BKrFQG) (opens in a new tab)

• A recent biometric photo (size 45x35 mm, portrait orientation, full-face view); digital codes are not accepted!

Note:

As of May 1, 2025, the regulation requiring you to submit a digital passport photo to the registration office applies to passport photos for ID cards and passports. However, this requirement does not apply to the driver’s license office and therefore does not affect applications for driver’s license documents. The Driver’s License Authority has the technical equipment available for taking photos on-site. You may continue to submit passport photos in analog form, preferably along with the complete application documents, to the Driver’s License Authority. 

• If applicable, proof of basic qualification under the Professional Driver Qualification Act for commercial freight or passenger transport on public roads for the issuance of a Driver Qualification Certificate (FQN)

Pickup of the card-style driver’s license at the Driver’s License Office:

• Written power of attorney

If applicable, continuing education certificates in accordance with the BKrFQG 

To do this, you must apply for a Driver Qualification Certificate (FQN).
