Vehicle: Apply for a seasonal license plate
Online services
If you only use a vehicle regularly during certain periods, you have the option of applying for seasonal license plates.
What do I need to know?
Service description
You can apply to the registration authority for a seasonal license plate for a specific period each year. This is the period during which you can use your vehicle on public roads each year. A seasonal license plate serves to identify the owner and indicate the period of use.
You can take advantage of this option if, for example, you own a motorcycle, a convertible, or a motorhome.
When registering your vehicle, you specify the operating period during which you wish to use the vehicle each year. You must first take out motor vehicle insurance for the operating period. The operating period can be between 2 and 11 full months per year.
Outside the operating period, you may not drive the vehicle on public roads and must park it away from public roads and places, for example, in a private parking space. The operating period is listed as a fraction on the right-hand side of the license plate. For example, "05/11" means that you may use the vehicle from May to November.
You can apply for registration in person or online using the internet-based vehicle registration system i-Kfz.
You must have the plates embossed yourself.
For vehicles that are not operated throughout the entire year, it is possible to obtain a seasonal license plate.
The period of operation is determined at the request of the owner and calculated in full months. It must be at least two months and may not exceed eleven months.
The vehicles may not be used on public roads outside the operating period and may not be parked in public traffic areas.
Classic car license plates and green license plates can also be issued as seasonal license plates.
Note:
If the seasonal period is to be changed, the insurance confirmation (eVB number) and new license plates are required.
When using seasonal license plates, there is no need to register and deregister a vehicle every year. We only charge vehicle tax for the seasonal period.
Prerequisites
- The owner of the vehicle has their primary residence in Mainz.
- The company headquarters or branch office is located in Mainz.
- The vehicle has a valid general inspection.
- There must be no outstanding motor vehicle tax. All outstanding fees incurred in connection with registration must be paid.
Procedure
You must submit the application in person or through an authorized representative.
Please make an appointment in advance. To do so, please use the online appointment scheduling system (see link at the bottom of this page).
Remark
Vehicle registration now only possible with direct debit authorization for motor vehicle tax
Anyone who registers a new vehicle or re-registers an existing one must issue a direct debit authorization for motor vehicle tax to the Ulm Main Customs Office. The direct debit authorization for motor vehicle tax is only valid for the registered vehicle and expires when the vehicle is deregistered.
Due to the switch to the SEPA direct debit procedure, you must generally submit a SEPA direct debit mandate for the collection of motor vehicle tax with each registration. The SEPA direct debit mandate valid for the Mainz registration authority can be found in the "Forms" section at the bottom of this page and in paper form on site.
Applications and information on tax relief for a vehicle can be found at www.zoll.de. Applications for tax relief due to severe disability can be submitted to the registration authority as part of the registration process. To do so, you must present the original copy of your severe disability card.
Outstanding fees at the registration authority
Registration is dependent on you having paid all outstanding fees incurred in connection with the registration. You can pay outstanding fees on site during the registration process.
