Municipalities may levy contributions for the expansion of public roads, paths, and squares in accordance with the Local Tax Act of Rhineland-Palatinate (recurring contributions for public transport facilities).

The recurring contributions for public transport facilities are levied for the renewal, expansion, improvement, or conversion of public roads, paths, and squares within a billing area.
The Mainz city area is divided into 17 billing areas.

The amount of the recurring contributions for public transport facilities is based on:

• the actual eligible investment costs incurred,
• the respective municipal share, and
• the size and structural usability of the property.

Depending on the billing area, 60% to 70% of the annual investment costs incurred for this purpose are generally apportioned. The remaining 30% to 40% is borne by the state capital of Mainz.

The request is made annually by means of a corresponding assessment notice.

Information on the collection of contributions is provided by Wirtschaftsbetrieb Mainz, which collects the development contributions on behalf of and on the instructions of the city administration of Mainz.
