M for Future - My Tram City Sub-project 3 - Connection Heiligkreuz Quarter and University Hospital
Brief description
On June 3, 2020, the City Council passed a resolution to further expand the tram network in Mainz. To further develop the Mainz tram network, new routes are to be evaluated, planned, and implemented. Comprehensive public participation is to take place in conjunction with the planning of each specific tram project.
The project is divided into the following subprojects:
- Subproject 1 – Binger Straße: Closing
the gap between Alicenplatz and Münsterplatz - Subproject 2 – Downtown,
including access to Neustadt and central access to the Old Town (including Höfchen) - Subproject 3 – Connection to the Heiligkreuz District and University Hospital
: Connection of the new Heiligkreuz District and parts of the Upper Town, Weisenau, and Hechtsheim-Ost, as well as the connection to the University Hospital - Long-term expansion of the tram network, including potential connections to the surrounding areas of Rheinhessen (work has not yet begun)
Since 2017, the modern Heiligkreuz district has been under construction, a new neighborhood with around 2,000 apartments for approximately 6,000 residents. As part of Subproject 3, the City of Mainz and Mainzer Mobilität are planning a new tram line that will directly connect the district to downtown Mainz. This line will not only improve access to the new district but will also have positive effects for Weisenau, Hechtsheim-Ost, and parts of the Upper Town.
Citizen participation
Through various opportunities for public participation, all citizens can share their feedback and suggestions. We ensure that the objections raised at the events are forwarded to the planning team and that these questions and comments are taken seriously. Each suggestion and concern is reviewed individually to determine how it should be addressed. This means we assess which interests can be pursued and incorporated into the planning and which cannot. In the latter case, we provide a clear explanation of why.
Multi-stage participation formats are taking place in the various subprojects:
- Kickoff event
- Online participation
- Theme market
- Thematic workshops
- Advisory Board
- Closing event
Total duration: approximately 24 months; dates will be announced on the Mainzer Mobilität project page (opens in a new tab).
Last but not least, there is also the legally required public participation process as part of the planning approval procedure.
