Hechtsheim skate park - equipping with new skate elements

Photo of the Hechtsheim skating facility

Brief description

The annual safety inspection of public playgrounds, carried out by the Parks and Environment Department, has shown that the skate park will have to be completely dismantled in the course of 2025. In addition, committed young people from Hechtsheim had already approached the Office for Youth and Family Affairs in advance with the request that the damaged skate elements be replaced.

As a result, funds for new purchases were made available early on from the Office for Youth and Family's "Child-Friendly Mainz" budget. A total of €70,000 is available.

Citizen participation

In 2023 and 2024, dedicated skaters met several times with officials from the Parks and Environment Department and the Office for Youth and Family Affairs and drew up various designs for a new skate park. These have since been reviewed by the relevant planners for feasibility, and the results will be presented to the skater group in the spring. The next steps will then be agreed upon jointly.

Affected urban area

Mainz-Hechtsheim

Planned planning and implementation period

  • A participation event is expected to take place at the skate park in the course of 2025.
  • The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.

Expected costs

70,000 euros are available for new purchases (budget item "Child-friendly Mainz").

Current processing status (June 23, 2025)

The preparatory group has worked intensively on the concept and layout of the elements for the new skate park. Initial discussions with manufacturers have also already taken place. For cost reasons, a wooden skate park was favored in spring 2025.

An examination of a wooden skate park revealed that the maintenance costs would be so high that permanent maintenance work would be necessary. The costs of purchasing and operating such a facility are considered disproportionate by the responsible Parks and Environment Department.

After a financial review of the various options, it was determined that the available funds of €70,000 are not sufficient to implement a skate park project that meets the wishes and expectations of the community. With the available funds, it would have been possible either to repair the existing damaged tar surface piece by piece and install a greatly reduced range of equipment, or to renew the entire tar surface without installing new equipment.

It has become clear that the "Child-Friendly Mainz" budget is not suitable for such a large and therefore cost-intensive project. At least €140,000 would be required to implement a facility of satisfactory quality.

It was therefore decided to apply for additional funds for the skate park project in Hechtsheim at a later date. Unfortunately, due to the current financial situation, the project has to be postponed indefinitely.
