Redesign of Bonifaziusstrasse and Bonifaziusplatz
Brief description
Bonifaziusstraße and Bonifaziusplatz were redesigned as part of the Social City funding program. The St. Bonifaz church grounds were part of this project. The aim was to upgrade the area as the entrance to Mainz's Neustadt district—from the main train station via the station forecourt, Bonifaziusstraße, and Bonifaziusplatz. In addition to increasing its attractiveness, the aim was also to improve safety for road users, create more green spaces, and improve accessibility.
Citizen participation
An online public forum on the project took place on February 11, 2021. The plans for redesigning the area were discussed together with the residents of Neustadt. The presentation and transcript of the event can be viewed at www.soziale-stadt-mainz.de (opens in a new tab). Prior to this, citizen participation and information events had already taken place on the overall Boppstraße, Bonifaziusstraße, and Bonifaziusplatz project. The plans were then revised and finally presented at an online citizen information event held on November 30, 2021.
Affected urban area
Mainz-New Town
Planned planning and implementation period
Construction began on May 15, 2023. The area has been open to traffic again since December 12, 2024. Remaining work, such as planting the church grounds and public areas and connecting the car-sharing charging station, was completed in 2025. The road and square were officially opened on April 7, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. The event took place on site. To create a harmonious streetscape, the city of Mainz also renovated the area around the public toilet on Bonifaziusstraße. The work was completed in spring 2025.
