Three-court school sports hall at the Carl-Zuckmayer-Schulzentrum Mainz-Lerchenberg

Exterior view of the sports hall

Brief description

Northwest of the existing Lerchenberg school complex, a new three-court sports hall is planned for school and club sports, which will also be used as a multi-purpose hall. In addition, the new school sports hall will serve as a meeting place. During the planning phase, great importance is being placed on implementing the latest energy standards, such as passive house standards, rainwater recovery via rainwater retention basins, heat recovery, and nature conservation. Another goal of the planning is to provide direct access to the multipurpose hall by creating a new square. Preserving as many trees as possible is a priority.

Citizen participation

On August 27, 2020, an information event on the planning took place at the Lerchenberg local council, to which residents of neighboring residential buildings were also invited. In addition, the plans were posted in the local administration office so that citizens could obtain information at any time. A public information event is planned for 2024. Invitations to this event are still to be sent out.

Mainz-Lerchenberg

Planned planning and implementation period

Planning for a new school sports hall with stands began in 2013 but could not be completed due to the lack of a school building permit from the supervisory authority. The Lerchenberg local council, the Lerchenberg associations, and the administration continued to pursue the installation of stands, but this was still rejected by the supervisory authority. At its meeting on April 6, 2022, the city council decided to build a school sports hall with stands, despite the lack of a school building permit. Completion of the school sports hall is planned for 2027. The old sports hall will then be demolished. Nature and recreation areas are to be created in its place.

As, in addition to future barrier-free access (the site is on a slope), particular emphasis is being placed on sustainability and nature conservation, an interdepartmental meeting was held on December 1, 2022 (involving the Parks and Environment Department, the Transport Department, the Property Department, Sports Office, Building Inspectorate, Public Library, Disability Officer) was held on December 1, 2022, with the aim of preserving as many trees as possible. Consultation with the Environmental Advisory Council of the state capital Mainz also took place.

Expected costs

The approved cost estimate for site preparation and development, building construction, technical installations, outdoor facilities, furnishings and artwork, and ancillary construction costs amounts to €16,837,000. The cost forecast will increase accordingly based on construction price increases for the years 2023 to 2025.

Current processing status (December 20, 2024)

The architectural firm has completed and approved the draft plans. The property planner has largely completed the building permit plans. The next step is to secure evidence in the immediate vicinity, as the hall will be dug very deep and temporary anchoring beyond the property boundary will be required for the necessary shoring.
