GaFöG During the Holiday Season

The legal right to full-day care applies even during school breaks. You can read here to find out exactly what that means and where to register your child.

GaFöG during the school break means that children can receive 8 hours of care and support per day and are provided with lunch. Initially, this program is available only to first-graders; it will be gradually expanded to include other grade levels. Participation fees will be charged. The exact cost has not yet been determined but will be shared here once it is finalized.

During the Easter, summer, and fall breaks, care that meets legal requirements will be provided. Only during the Christmas break and on days when school is not in session will the City of Mainz observe the scheduled closures. No services will be offered during these times.

The fall break of 2026 will be the first break for first-graders from the 2026–2027 school year during which parents can book a program that meets the legal entitlement requirements.

Registration for the Holidays

Registration for summer care programs will be available through the Mainzer Ferien website and is not dependent on the children’s school. For city-run programs, the registration period will run from July 27 to August 31, 2026.

We recommend that you register your child early to ensure they get a spot in the program of your choice

The parent fee for programs that meet legal requirements is €195 per week (reduced rate: €95).

Since there are already many different summer care programs in Mainz, programs offered by non-municipal providers—such as clubs or parishes—are also listed on our registration platform.

If you have any questions, or if you offer vacation care and would like to list it on our registration platform, please feel free to contact us at mainzer.ferienstadt.mainzde!
