Colorful Easter eggs from Zagreb
Since Easter 2022, three colorful giant Easter eggs from Mainz's twin city Zagreb have enriched the cityscape and have now become an integral part of the Easter tradition in Mainz.
Colorful Easter eggs from Zagreb brighten up the Easter season in Mainz
The 2.05-meter-tall, approximately 120-kilogram art objects made of Plexiglas were donated to the city of Mainz by the tourism board of the Croatian capital as a token of friendship.
Every year, the Croatian Cultural Association of Mainz and the Parks and Recreation Department of the state capital of Mainz work together to ensure that the colorfully decorated eggs find their place in vibrant flower beds.
Tradition with symbolic power
In Croatia, colorfully painted Easter eggs—known there as “Uskrsna Pisanica”—have a long tradition. Croatian eggs are decorated with a variety of symbols, patterns, and landscapes. They embody the joy of Easter as well as the message of life and peace.
The exhibits in Mainz were painted by members of the Croatian Cultural Community (Željko Kolarek, Zlatko Štrfiček, Branko Matina, Ljerka Tropšek, J. Gregurić, Radovan Grgec, Radmila Bošnjak, and Zlatko Kolarek) in the style of “Croatian naive art” from the Podravina region, a form of folk art known for its vibrant colors and detailed, rural motifs.
Each egg is one of a kind and will remain in Mainz as a lasting gift.
A sign of living city friendship
Since then, the elaborately painted giant eggs have been displayed every year during Easter at three different locations throughout the city, delighting both locals and visitors alike. They serve as a visible symbol of the vibrant city partnership between Mainz and Zagreb, which has existed since 1967.
