Archival material is subject to a retention period of 30 years after the files are created. Personal documents may only be used 10 years after the death of the person concerned or, if the year of death is not known to the archive, 100 years after the birth of the person concerned. If neither the year of birth nor the year of death of the person concerned is known, a period of 60 years after the creation of the documents applies (LArchG §3). In certain cases, the retention period may be shortened upon request.
