Mainz SchUM Culture Days
The SchUM Culture Days in the state capital of Mainz took place for the eighth time in a row in 2025. The program ran from 7 September to 6 December. The focus is on the multifaceted Jewish culture on the Rhine, which can be experienced at various locations in the city with lectures, films, concerts and guided tours.
The program will be published in August 2026.
Background
Worms started the trend back in 2005 with its "Culture Days," and Mainz followed suit in 2018 with its "Jewish Culture Days." Since 2020, the city of Speyer has also been participating with its own program. All three cities convey vibrant Jewish culture with their own "SchUM Culture Days" programs.
The heyday of the Jewish communities based in Speyer, Worms, and Mainz (then named "SchUM" communities after their Hebrew initial letters) began as early as the 10th century, when they had a decisive influence on the architecture of synagogues and ritual baths as well as on the burial culture of all Central European, i.e., Ashkenazi, Judaism. In addition, their scholars established liturgical chants and prayers that are still relevant to Jews worldwide today.
