Bicycles are becoming increasingly important in Mainz: whether for commuting to work, school, shopping, or leisure activities, more and more Mainz residents are getting on their bikes. This is also shown by our mobility survey from 2023: within 15 years, the proportion of journeys made by bicycle has more than doubled – and the trend is rising. To make this safe, fast, and attractive, Mainz needs a strategic basis based on a clear, binding consensus between politicians, administrators, and citizens.

This basis—RADKONSENS MAINZ—is being developed through intensive participation by the aforementioned stakeholders, with the administration taking the lead in its creation. Specifically, RADKONSENS MAINZ consists of BYPAD and RADNETZ MAINZ. While BYPAD identifies strengths and weaknesses in bicycle (and pedestrian) traffic and derives goals and action strategies from this, RADNETZ MAINZ determines the importance of bicycle traffic on specific routes.

The decision for RADKONSENS MAINZ was unanimously passed by the city council in 2022. In 2023, the tender was prepared and carried out accordingly in order to find suitable offices for this extensive project. These had to be professionally qualified and able to carry out citizen participation.

The tender process was completed in the winter of 2023/2024. The Danish specialist firm Ramboll is working on the Mainz cycle network together with the Dutch firm Mobycon. BYPAD is being supported by the specialist firm PGV Alrutz from Hanover.

In spring 2026, the cycling consensus is on the home stretch. The final public participation event for the cycle network took place on September 16, 2025, followed by online participation. The last BYPAD workshop was held on October 8. The final reports are currently being prepared and compiled for the political committees.
