RADNETZ MAINZ
The cycling mode share in Mainz is growing! In order to support this positive development not only now, but also in the future, the city administration, in cooperation with specialist offices, is creating the RADNETZ MAINZ, which shows the administration, politicians and citizens where cycling should be strengthened in the future.
RADNETZ MAINZ - What it is and what it is not
RADNETZ MAINZ is the strategic orientation framework for administration, politics, and citizens. An essential component is the plan, which makes it clear to everyone where bicycle traffic is to be strengthened in the future. In addition, recommendations are also made for bicycle signage, bicycle parking, and other bicycle services.
In this way, the administration is implementing the demands and wishes of citizens to develop a transparent, uniform, and continuous route network for bicycle traffic. Based on the civic engagement "Mapathon" and further route considerations by initiatives and citizens (e.g., "Gonsenheim setzt aufs Rad" [Gonsenheim focuses on cycling]), this process began in 2023. Due to the public relevance and the incentives already developed by citizens, the public was involved in the process at an early stage through two participation opportunities.
RADNETZ MAINZ always deliberately focuses on the network concept: it is not about individual infrastructure measures such as bicycle lanes, but about planning and presenting a superordinate, uniform system of bicycle connections. This creates the basis for the long-term, city-wide development of bicycle traffic. A major advantage of this approach is planning security – both for the city administration and for citizens. RADNETZ MAINZ does not yet specify the concrete design, but rather shows where bicycle traffic will be particularly relevant in the future.
RADNETZ MAINZ - How to understand the plan
At the heart of RADNETZ MAINZ is the division into three network categories, which focuses not on the specific infrastructure but on the transport significance of the respective routes.
The qualities of the network levels differ in criteria such as:
- Continuity & directness
- Waiting times & priority
- Care & maintenance
- Connection to other transport systems (e.g., public transport)...

RADNETZ MAINZ - Participation procedure
Citizen participation is a key component in the development of RADNETZ MAINZ. That is why the process comprises two participation phases.
The first took place at the beginning of the process: on September 25, 2024, the first draft of RADNETZ MAINZ was presented to the public and put up for discussion. In addition, people who were unable to attend the event had the opportunity to view the draft online and submit their suggestions.
Specialist agencies and the administration then evaluated the suggestions received and incorporated them into a revised version.
The results of RADNETZ MAINZ were presented during the second public participation event on September 16, 2025. All those present had the opportunity to ask questions. In addition, all interested citizens were able to vote on their favorite Mapathon routes, both on site and online, and name junctions in RADNETZ MAINZ where they saw potential for improvement.
The documentation for both events is available for download.
