Aircraft noise

Airplane

The proximity to Frankfurt Airport means that Mainz is exposed to a high level of aircraft noise. The state of Hesse has drawn up noise maps, including noise mapping of Frankfurt Airport. The results of the noise mapping can be viewed in the measurement reports.

The issue of aircraft noise is a key focus of the noise abatement division. Noise pollution affecting Mainz residents has increased dramatically once again with the opening of the new north runway in September 2011. With the unanimous city council resolution to fight the steadily increasing aircraft noise pollution by all means necessary, the City of Mainz has been actively advocating since 2000—at the political, legal, and technical levels—for the interests of citizens plagued by aircraft noise.

On February 7, 2008, the City of Mainz filed a lawsuit against the planning approval decision with the Hessian Administrative Court in Kassel. The statement of claim is available for download at the bottom of this page.
