In nature and landscape conservation, wild plant and animal species, their communities and natural habitats are preserved.

Nature conservation and landscape protection aim to preserve wild plant and animal species, their communities, and natural habitats, as well as to preserve landscapes and parts of landscapes under natural conditions.

The aim of nature conservation is to preserve nature and the landscape for their own sake and as the basis for human life and health (Section 1 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (opens in a new tab)). The objectives of nature conservation and landscape management are defined as follows:

Nature and landscapes in populated and unpopulated areas are to be protected, maintained, developed and, where necessary, restored in such a way that

  1. the biological diversity,
  2. the performance and functionality of the natural environment, including the regenerative capacity and sustainable usability of natural resources,
  3. as well as the diversity, uniqueness, beauty, and recreational value of nature and the landscape

are permanently safeguarded.

Protection also includes the maintenance, development, and, where necessary, restoration of nature and the landscape.
