Manuscripts
The Wissenschaftliche Stadtbibliothek owns around 1,300 manuscripts, two thirds of which date back to the Middle Ages.
The library of the Mainz Carthusian monastery, which was dissolved in 1781, is the most important source of the mainly late medieval manuscripts. Other sources include the Carmelites, the Benedictine monastery of St. Jakob, the Jesuit college, the Capuchins, the Augustinian hermits, and the old University of Mainz.
