“Mainz is growing, and the demands on public space are increasing. Our goal is to organize the various forms of mobility in such a way that they interact safely, clearly, and with as little conflict as possible,” explains Janina Steinkrüger, Head of the Department of Environment and Mobility.

Already today, about one-third of all trips in Mainz are made by bicycle. Hintere Bleiche plays an important role as a link between the main train station, downtown, and the Rhine. Many cyclists already use the street as an alternative to the more congested main thoroughfares.

By designating it as a bike street, this function will be made visible and clearly defined in terms of traffic in the future. Bicycle streets establish clear rules, increase safety, and make important cycling routes more recognizable. This benefits more than just cyclists: an attractive and efficient cycling infrastructure helps reduce conflicts on the road and relieves pressure on sidewalks.

“If you want to encourage people to ride bikes, you have to offer safe and convenient routes. The Hintere Bleiche is particularly well-suited for this due to its location and its existing importance for bicycle traffic,” said Steinkrüger.

The measure is part of Mainz’s strategy to strengthen eco-friendly transportation. The goal is to expand attractive alternatives to cars where they make sense and are practical, without restricting access to the city center.

Access will remain possible for residents, delivery vehicles, tradespeople, and other authorized traffic. This will be ensured by the sign reading “Residents Only.”

Before implementation, informational letters will be distributed to residents. In addition, the team at the fahrRad office is offering several information sessions and consultation appointments at the Stadthaus Große Bleiche. Staff will also be on site during the implementation phase to answer questions and address suggestions.

The conversion of Hintere Bleiche into a bicycle street will take place after the summer break in 2026.
