"Axis to the Rhine" - redesign of the area around the Caponniere

Photo of the area between the Caponniere and the banks of the Rhine

Brief description

As part of the Social City funding program, the area surrounding the Caponniere in Mainz's Neustadt district was renovated as a sub-project of the so-called "Axis to the Rhine." The aim was to create a place where people could experience the transition from the Rhine to the Green Axis and appreciate the historical significance of the location.

The redesign has created an attractive recreational and leisure area that promotes awareness and perception of the historical references and the high-quality surroundings. The open staircase to the Rhine is now barrier-free following the redesign.

Citizen participation

On January 28, 2020, a public participation event was held in the gymnasium of the Feldberg School to discuss the redevelopment of the area around the Caponniere (Section 3, "Axis to the Rhine"), at which the initial planning ideas were presented by the commissioned planner, the Parks and Environment Department, and the neighborhood management team. The information event planned for April 23, 2020, did not take place due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the results were presented online at www.soziale-stadt-mainz.de (opens in a new tab). Neighborhood management staff were available to answer questions and receive comments. In addition, direct residents received information letters from the neighborhood management about the progress of the measure.
