Background information on the town hall renovation
In February 2018, the city council of the state capital of Mainz passed a resolution in principle to renovate Mainz City Hall. In September 2020, the city council decided to carry out the town hall renovation as part of the planning and cost update. Planning permission for the refurbishment of Mainz Town Hall was granted in summer 2021.
Due to outdated and no longer functional building systems, severe damage to the facades, and fire safety deficiencies in the building, Mainz City Hall must be renovated.
The goal of the renovation is both to modernize the building services and to preserve the characteristic features of the administrative building and its historically significant interior design in the public areas—including the lobby, foyer, council chamber, auditorium, and the distinctive meeting rooms.
In addition to the conservation measures, the administrative building is also to be modified in some areas to accommodate modern administrative work. The currently non-accessible entrance to the lecture hall in the basement and the public gallery of the council chamber will also be addressed as part of the project to ensure the building’s continued and appropriate use as city hall.
In November 2019, the city administration moved out of City Hall and has since taken up quarters in the Stadthaus Große Bleiche and the Malakoff-Passage.
In this context, the town hall’s historically protected furniture was used to furnish the Stadthaus or was professionally stored. A digital room inventory was created as the basis for a restoration of the defining elements of this cultural monument that complies with preservation guidelines. A storage concept ensures the preservation of furniture, lamps, and fixtures attached to the walls. The original furniture, designed by Arne Jacobsen, has already been inventoried and cataloged.
In September 2020, the City Council approved the updated plans and cost estimates for the City Hall renovation and instructed the administration to expand the submitted plans (Resolution Draft 1539/2020) to include the Citizens’ Forum and the Citizens’ Roof (Amendment 1638/2020) and to obtain the building permit, which was granted in the summer of 2021.
