Victor-Hugo Ufer
The last section of the riverbank, Victor Hugo Ufer, stretches from the swing bridge just behind Malakoff Passage to the railway bridge. From Stresemann Ufer, walkers must first pass the cultural center and cross the small pedestrian bridge to reach the pier. This is where Victor Hugo Ufer begins, often referred to simply as Mainz's winter harbor.
The beer garden at the tip of the pier is a popular meeting place for Mainz residents. From here, it's worth taking a look in all directions: Theodor-Heuss-Brücke, Maaraue, and the Main estuary are all visible.
On beautiful summer evenings, it's worth arriving early at the Winterhafen – this is where large and small groups meet to enjoy one of the most enjoyable summer activities: barbecuing. The Mainz Rowing Club and
the Mainz Canoe Club are based on the Winterhafen grounds.
A few years ago, a stylish restaurant called the Bootshaus opened on this tranquil stretch of riverbank. It's a wonderful place to enjoy warm afternoons in deck chairs. Shortly after the boathouse, the path climbs steeply up to the railway bridge, which was opened in 1862 and leads to Gustavsburg and the Mainspitze – where the Rhine and Main rivers meet. To the west, it forms the transition to Mainz City Park.
