Path of remembrance

The brochure documents crimes of National Socialism in Mainz

Brochure title page

Keeping alive the memory of the Nazi regime's reign of terror while openly promoting democracy is the goal of the city of Mainz and the foundation "House of Remembrance – for Democracy and Acceptance," which was established for this purpose in 2015.

On behalf of the state capital of Mainz, authors Hedwig Brüchert, Ralph Erbar, and Joachim Schulte have created the brochure "Path of Remembrance."

The brochure guides readers to selected sites in Mainz that are closely associated with persecution by the Nazi regime of terror. The "Path of Remembrance" is part of the commemoration of the victims of Nazi crimes in Mainz.

Twelve stations in the city center were selected, which can be reached on foot within two hours.

Along the way, several commemorative plaques, steles, and stumbling stones already provide information about the historical events and the fates of those involved. More are to follow.

The trail takes readers to places that were once scenes of terror and still serve as reminders of the systematic extermination of entire population groups and the persecution and suffering of many Mainz residents. These "dead stones" tell stories that the texts alone can only begin to convey.

The further reading list in the brochure is intended to encourage readers to search for clues themselves and to explore other aspects of Mainz's history during the Nazi era.

As a place of remembrance and an official memorial site for all victims of the Nazi dictatorship, the "House of Remembrance – for Democracy and Acceptance" was opened in Mainz on April 11, 2018, as a documentation and educational center.
