Brief information

As the capital of northern Israel, Haifa stretches from the green, wooded hills of the historic Carmel Mountains to the Mediterranean Sea. Haifa has the most important port and is the third largest city in Israel, with a population of around 286,000 people of different religions living together in harmony.

The transport network is well developed, with a cable car and Israel's only underground railway. Thanks to good connections to Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv and to every other city in the country by bus, train, expressways, and domestic airport, Haifa is easily accessible from anywhere.

History

The history of Haifa can be traced back to the 14th century BC, when a Persian traveler reported on shipbuilding in Haifa. At the time of the Crusades—alongside Caesarea and Acre as the most important port and fiercely contested—Haifa was conquered in 1291 as the last of the Crusader cities by the Mamluk Sultan Baibars. The new ruler destroyed all the houses, plantations, and irrigation systems.

It was not until the 18th century that Haifa experienced a new economic boom as a center of the wheat trade. With the return of the Jews to the "Holy Land" in the late 19th century, the city experienced steady growth. Between 1870 and 1905, Haifa continued to expand and became a hub for railway lines to Damascus in the east and Cairo in the south. During this time, many German settlers also settled in Haifa, applying their knowledge of agriculture and cultivating the land around Haifa.

With the expansion of the port and the construction of an oil pipeline, Haifa developed into the economic center of Palestine, which was then under British mandate, in the 1930s and attracted many European Jews who had been forced to flee their homes. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Haifa integrated approximately 40,000 Russian immigrants.

Places of interest

It is believed that the name Haifa derives from the Hebrew expression "Choff Jaffeh," which means "beautiful coast." The view of Haifa from the sea is dominated by the golden dome of the Bahá'í Temple. In the traditionally designed gardens, you will find the tomb of the Persian-born Bab, who was executed in 1850 at the age of 31 for his religious teachings. In 2008, the Shrine of the Bab, which is considered a symbol of the city, was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Outside the city, near Muhraka, a Carmelite monastery marks the spot where the altar of the prophet Elijah is said to have stood when he "went up to the top of Carmel." In Bet Shearim, there is a 2nd-century necropolis carved out of the rock, where some of the most important scholars of that era were buried. Decorated stone sarcophagi with inscriptions in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek are of particular interest. Just outside the city are the villages of the Druze, a religious community that emerged as a splinter group of the Ismaili Shiites in the 11th century. Not far from Haifa is the border with Lebanon. There you will find the Rosh Hanigra caves, which you can visit with their rocks, caves, and underground passages.

Thanks to its central location, Haifa is the hub of tourist traffic, from which all other tourist attractions in northern Israel, such as Akko and Caesarea, Nazareth, and the Sea of Galilee, can be visited.

University and schools

Haifa has an excellent education system. Around 40,000 students attend the city's universities. One of the universities focuses on the humanities. The country's technical expertise is taught at the Technion. At this university, it is also possible to study medicine in addition to the natural sciences.

Economy

Haifa has quite impressive port facilities, thanks in part to its ideal location on the Mediterranean Sea. In addition to being the center of the country's heavy industry with numerous metal foundries, Haifa is also home to Israel's largest refinery, several soap factories, and a large power plant. The Technion trains the next generation for the high-tech industry, which has led to the establishment of relevant companies in Haifa. Tourism is

also an important source of income for Haifa, providing numerous jobs in hotels and restaurants.

Recreation and leisure

Haifa is surrounded by the sea on three sides. Well-maintained beaches and promenades line the long coastline. From sunbathing to surfing or diving in the fascinating underwater world, Haifa offers everything a tourist could wish for from April to November.

The Carmel Mountains, mentioned in the Bible, are now a nature reserve and refuge for various species of wildlife. On signposted hiking trails that lead through valleys and gorges, you can breathe in the fresh forest air and enjoy the unique view.

There is also a wide range of other leisure activities on offer: bowling, tennis, lawn cricket, squash, swimming, hang gliding, and mountain biking. Night owls can choose from pubs, discos, dance clubs, and other entertainment venues. The city's lighting alone is another attraction in itself.

Culture and events

Haifa is home to over a dozen different museums and offers a range of exhibitions of various kinds. These include the State Museum of Maritime Studies, which displays a collection of rare maritime objects and unique nautical art.

The Museum of Science, Planning, and Technology, located in the historic Technion building, presents the fundamentals of science and advances in technology in a visual, practical, and tangible way.

Also interesting is the Museum of Illegal Immigration, which also reflects the history of the Israeli navy. Israel's large granaries, "Dagon," house the Grain Museum, which contains rare archaeological finds from ancient times. Other museums worth visiting include the Mane Katz Museum, dedicated to the Jewish painter, and the Edith and Reuwen Hecht Museum, located on the university campus.

Haifa usually hosts an international film festival every year, a folklore festival every two years, and a flower show. In addition, events such as theater performances and concerts by various symphony orchestras take place every evening.

Development of the town twinning

Contacts between Haifa and Mainz date back to 1969, when the municipal administrations of both cities first organized an exchange of youth work professionals. In an effort to strengthen ties with Israel and to contribute to coming to terms with the past, it was decided to establish a city partnership with Haifa, especially since many emigrated Jews from Mainz lived there. However, before the official partnership was established, the universities of the two cities joined forces in February 1981 by signing a partnership agreement.

Contact between the two cities grew closer year by year, until finally, on March 30, 1987, the long-standing partnership was officially confirmed. With the support of the city of Mainz, a "Mainz Library," the "Bet Magenza" youth center, and a senior citizens' center named after the former mayor of Mainz, Jockel Fuchs, were opened in Haifa.
