New fountain
Until the town was destroyed in the Second World War, it was part of a prestigious square. This is where the residents obtained fresh drinking water.
Drinking water for the new district
There is hardly any other architectural monument in downtown Mainz that pedestrians literally pass by so often. Or rather, have to walk around—as is the case with the New Fountain on Neubrunnenplatz.
When you walk down Lotharstraße and want to cross Große Bleiche, it inevitably catches your eye. Not only because of its sheer size. The baroque fountain also seems a little out of place amid the ensemble of functional post-war buildings surrounding the square.
Until the city was destroyed in World War II in 1942, the New Fountain was part of a prestigious square, framed by the former university bursary and the Wolf-Metternichschen Hof.
