The federal government funds emergency wells for the drinking water supply. 

There are 14 such wells in the city of Mainz, 12 of which are maintained by Mainzer Netze and 2 by the Rhineland-Palatinate Water Supply Authority. Naturally, the emergency wells are inspected regularly and water samples are taken.
