Here you will find the press releases about operations of the Mainz Fire Department from November 2024.
03.11.2024 - Traffic accident with 3 people trapped in Mainz-Weisenau
A single-vehicle accident occurred in Mainz-Weisenau around 3:00 a.m. on Saturday night. For reasons that are still unclear, a car veered off the road at the intersection of Hohlstraße and Heiligenkreuzweg and crashed into a wall.
When the first responders arrived on the scene, all three occupants were still inside the vehicle. Fortunately, all were responsive and none were trapped. Until the arrival of the emergency medical services, the individuals were cared for and given first aid by the fire department. To ensure a safe rescue, heavy hydraulic equipment was deployed in close coordination between the emergency medical services and the fire department. This allowed for the creation of a large side opening on the driver’s side to gently free the three trapped occupants. The fire department’s operation concluded after approximately 1.5 hours.
Apparently, all three had a guardian angel. They were transported to nearby hospitals for further examination. The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
A total of 20 personnel from the professional fire departments of Stations 1 and 2, as well as the Weisenau Volunteer Fire Department, were on the scene. The emergency medical services were present with 5 vehicles and 10 personnel, and the police with 3 patrol cars.
04.11.2024 - Medical emergency leads to long traffic jam on A60
The Mainz Fire Department was called to a truck accident on the A60 this Monday afternoon. Traveling toward Bingen, near the Hechtsheim West exit, a truck was involved in a single-vehicle accident due to a medical emergency. As a result, the vehicle’s fuel tank was damaged, and approximately 100 liters of diesel spilled across all three lanes.
A first responder acted in an exemplary manner, caring for the patient until the fire department arrived. Unfortunately, such behavior is not always the norm; we encourage others to follow this example.
The fire department prevented the fuel from spreading further by placing skid pans and sprinkling the roadway with oil absorbent. The emergency medical services transported the patient to the hospital for further examination.
Due to the extensive spill, the roadway had to be completely closed, much to the chagrin of many commuters, and can only be reopened lane by lane after being cleaned by a specialized company.
No estimate of the damage can be provided at this time.
10.11.2024 - Apartment fire in Mainz-Bretzenheim
On Sunday night around 12:20 a.m., smoke alarms went off, waking residents of the building on Draiser Straße. The emergency call was made immediately, and other residents were alerted. Emergency crews from both professional fire stations, as well as the Mainz-Bretzenheim Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the scene.
When the fire department arrived, smoke was already billowing from the apartment where the fire had started into the hallway. Immediately, two teams wearing breathing apparatus entered the apartment to rescue people and fight the fire. Other adjacent apartments also had to be checked for smoke infiltration. At the same time, a high-pressure fan kept the stairwell smoke-free so that it could continue to be used as an escape route.
Fortunately, no one was left in the apartment where the fire broke out. Thanks to the early alarm and rapid response, the fire was declared extinguished just 20 minutes after the emergency crews arrived. The residents were able to return to the building after the fire was put out. The criminal investigation unit sealed off the apartment and is investigating the cause of the fire.
In addition to the fire department, the police and emergency medical services were also on site with several units.

24.11.2024 - Smouldering fire in suspended ceiling noticed in time: Extensive firefighting operation in Ebersheim
Early Sunday morning, a major fire department operation took place in Mainz-Ebersheim that lasted a total of four and a half hours. Alerted by an unexplained smell of smoke, the invisible fire was discovered and extinguished.
Around 2:20 a.m., residents of a single-family home noticed an unidentifiable smell of smoke on two floors and alerted the fire department. While such emergency calls often result in false alarms, this case demonstrated why emergency responders take every call seriously: During an inspection using measuring devices, a dangerously high concentration of carbon monoxide (CO) was detected on the ground floor.
During a further inspection using breathing apparatus, smoke was first observed coming from an electrical outlet on the upper floor. Using a thermal imaging camera, the emergency responders subsequently detected a significant increase in temperature in the suspended ceiling on the ground floor. Originating from a built-in ceiling light, a smoldering fire had developed unnoticed in the insulation and ceiling structure.
Members of the Ebersheim Volunteer Fire Department and the professional fire department opened the false ceiling, revealing the extent of the fire. The fire had already spread beyond the insulation into the ceiling structure, necessitating its removal using heavy equipment. This resulted in damage to the underfloor heating on the upper floor as well as to a load-bearing beam.
After clearing several square meters of the ceiling and ventilating the rooms, a structural engineer from the THW inspected the ceiling. To ensure structural integrity, the fire department shored up the structure in the area of the fire. The operation for the approximately 35 responders was not completed until around 7 a.m.
The operation demonstrates how important it is to alert the fire department promptly when abnormalities are detected. The high CO concentration and the developing fire could potentially have had fatal consequences for the family that very night. As a result, the house can continue to be inhabited after the necessary repairs, and no one was injured.
26.11.2024 - Garage fire in Drais
At around 4 a.m., the fire department dispatch center alerted the Mainz Fire Department to a garage fire on Daniel-Brendel-Straße in Mainz-Drais. When the first responders arrived, the garage’s roof structure and a wooden shed were on fire. The residents of the house were able to evacuate to the street unharmed.
A team wearing breathing apparatus prevented the fire from spreading to the residential building, where only minor property damage occurred. At the same time, a second team began fighting the fire on the garage’s wooden roof. To do this, the roof sheathing was cut open later in the operation to reach additional pockets of embers.
The operation was completed after approximately 1.5 hours. In addition to the Mainz Fire Department, the police and emergency medical services were involved. The fire department has no information regarding the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage.
27.11.2024 - Train line closure and traffic accidents
Several emergency operations in Mainz are currently causing delays during the morning rush hour. The Mainz Fire Department is currently assisting with the evacuation of a train traveling toward Frankfurt. In coordination with Deutsche Bahn’s emergency manager and the fire department, the approximately 130 passengers are being transported to the Römisches Theater station via a replacement train. Due to this operation, all tracks in this area are closed. At the same time, a traffic accident involving two vehicles occurred near the Mainspitz Triangle around 7:30 a.m. The two wedged-together vehicles blocked the center lane and had to be separated by the fire department. Due to another traffic accident on the A63 heading toward Mainz between Wörrstadt and Saulheim, this highway also had to be fully closed for a short time.
27.11.2024 - Follow-up message: Train line closure and traffic accidents
On Wednesday morning, rush hour traffic in and around Mainz was severely disrupted by incidents on both rail and road, which also kept the fire departments busy.
Around 6:30 a.m., the fire department dispatch center received a report of a passenger accident on the Mainz-Frankfurt rail line between the "Römisches Theater" station and the Südbrücke. Due to the response by the fire department, police, and rail management, the line had to be completely closed for several hours. The approximately 130 passengers on the affected S-Bahn train were continuously updated on the situation via announcements and by personnel on site.
In addition, a replacement train was organized to safely transport the passengers back to the Römisches Theater station. Since this train could only travel at walking speed for safety reasons, it took about two hours, including all organizational preparations, for the fire department and police to evacuate the passengers onto the replacement train.
One woman on the S-Bahn showed signs of a medical problem even before the evacuation. She was immediately given first aid by firefighters and handed over to the emergency medical services. After receiving outpatient care on site, she was able to leave the scene.
The fire department personnel concluded their operation around 9 a.m. The emergency responders on site expressed their gratitude to the passengers for their patience and cooperation, which allowed the multi-stage evacuation to be completed in just 12 minutes. The operations by the federal and criminal police were still ongoing at that time.
Meanwhile, an accident occurred around 7:30 a.m. on the A60 between Mainz and Rüsselsheim. Two vehicles collided at the Mainspitz interchange. The Laubenheim Volunteer Fire Department and the Mainz Professional Fire Department secured the accident scene and separated the wedged vehicles. Two people with minor injuries did not need to be taken to the hospital. Rescue operations at this location caused traffic delays.
In addition, an accident on the A63 between Wörrstadt and Saulheim caused a complete closure and resulting traffic congestion.
A total of 45 firefighters were involved in the operations. Since the operations took place during a shift change, an additional emergency vehicle was manned at Fire Station 1 in Bretzenheim until the relieved crew could finally head home after more than 26 hours on duty.
28.11.2024 - Traffic accident with 2 injured persons on Koblenzer Straße
On Tuesday at around 9:50 a.m., a traffic accident involving two cars occurred at the intersection of Koblenzer Straße and Ackermannweg.
When the first responders arrived on the scene, the two drivers were no longer in the vehicles and were already being attended to by first responders. Fortunately, there were no other people in the vehicles. The fire department provided initial medical care to the patients and secured the accident vehicles against fire. Finally, the vehicle batteries were disconnected, and leaking fluids were contained by the fire department. The two injured individuals were handed over to the emergency medical services, who provided further medical care. One driver was transported to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries.
The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident and the extent of the damage and arranged for the removal of the vehicles. A total of 8 firefighters from Station 1 of the professional fire department were on the scene, along with the emergency medical services, which deployed 3 vehicles and 6 personnel. The police were on site with 3 patrol cars.
