Here you will find the press releases about operations of the Mainz Fire Department from November 2025.
06.11.2025 - Traffic accident at the Koblenzer Straße/Saarstraße junction - one person slightly injured
The Mainz Fire Department was called to a traffic accident at the intersection of Koblenzer Straße and Saarstraße at approximately 5:14 p.m. today.
Upon arrival, they found that two cars had collided. One of the vehicles was on its side and had lost a wheel, while the other had significant front-end damage. Two people were involved in the accident, including one who, fortunately, sustained only minor injuries.
The fire department provided first aid and care for those involved until the arrival of emergency medical services. The police secured the scene against oncoming traffic throughout the operation and managed traffic control and detours. This resulted in traffic delays on Koblenzer Straße heading toward Lerchenberg, as well as on the exit ramp from Saarstraße toward Gonsenheim/Bretzenheim.
After about 45 minutes, the scene was handed over to the police. The Mainz Fire Department was on site with eight personnel, the police with several patrol cars and officers, and the emergency medical services with one vehicle and two personnel.
07.11.2025 - Beeping smoke alarm rescues sleeping person
At 12:20 a.m. on Friday morning, the Mainz Fire Department was dispatched to a smoke alarm that had gone off on Richarda-Huch-Straße in the Hartenberg/Münchfeld neighborhood. An alert neighbor had heard the smoke alarm beeping and promptly called 911.
When emergency responders arrived, no fire or smoke was visible from the outside, but no one answered the doorbell or knocked. Consequently, the apartment door was forced open while the turntable ladder was simultaneously positioned at the rear of the building.
Inside the slightly smoky apartment, a sleeping person was found, who was awakened by the fire department and brought outside. The smoke was caused by plastic parts from a coffee maker that had been left to simmer on the stove. The kitchen was inspected, and the apartment was subsequently ventilated mechanically.
The person was responsive and uninjured but was taken to a hospital by the emergency medical services as a precaution due to a pre-existing injury.
Ten firefighters from the Mainz Fire Department were on the scene, supported by two emergency medical service personnel and two police officers.
The Mainz Fire Department commends the neighbor’s alertness, whose actions prevented a more serious incident.
12.11.2025 - Traffic accident in Wallstraße
The fire department was called to a traffic accident involving a trapped person on Wallstraße in Mainz Hartenberg/Münchfeld at around 11 a.m. When the fire department arrived, first responders had already freed the person from the car, and emergency medical services were treating the victim. The fire department’s response was limited to securing the scene and assisting the emergency medical services. The injured person was transported by the ambulance service to a nearby hospital for further treatment. The fire department was on site with 3 emergency vehicles and 14 personnel.
16.11.2025 - Explosion and apartment fire in Mainz Neustadt - Several people rescued via turntable ladders
On Sunday evening, an explosion occurred at the corner of Kreyßigstraße and Goethestraße, followed by a fire in an apartment. Around 8:20 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department received several emergency calls. Callers reported flames coming from a ground-floor apartment as well as an explosion in the five-story building. Six people were taken to the hospital with injuries.
When the first responders arrived, they were met with a highly dynamic scene: parts of the entrance area had collapsed due to the explosion, meaning the building was initially accessible only via turntable ladders. Flames were still billowing from the ground floor.
Two people had to be rescued via aerial ladders; they had made themselves known at windows on the second floor and were unable to leave the building on their own. Both were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Three other people from the building were also taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation. Additionally, one person from the affected building suffered a heart attack.
The fire department launched a comprehensive firefighting operation using three hoses to combat the fire sources on the ground floor. The fire was extinguished after about an hour.
In the meantime, up to six teams wearing breathing apparatus were simultaneously on the scene, using several turntable ladders to survey the building, inspect sections of the structure, and search for additional people. No other people were in the building when emergency responders arrived.
A structural engineering consultant from the Federal Agency for Technical Relief was called in to assist the incident command in assessing the building’s structural integrity. Additionally, a health section command was established due to the extensive need for rescue and care. Here, approximately 20 affected individuals were registered and cared for.
Currently, three full firefighting units from the professional and volunteer fire departments, a total of around 40 emergency vehicles, and approximately 110 personnel from the professional fire department, volunteer fire departments, emergency medical services, aid organizations, and the THW are on the scene. To ensure basic municipal protection, both fire stations of the Mainz Fire Department were staffed by volunteer fire departments. These were deployed in two parallel operations.
The fire department’s operation concluded around 11 p.m. According to an assessment by the structural engineer, the building is not in danger of collapsing. Due to smoke damage, the building is uninhabitable until further notice. The landlord is arranging for the tenants’ relocation.
The fire department does not yet have any information regarding the cause of the explosion or the extent of property damage. The police have launched an investigation.
24.11.2025 - Fire in allotment garden in Mainz-Gonsenheim
Mainz, Monday, November 24: A fire broke out in a garden shed at an allotment garden in Mainz-Gonsenheim this morning. The Mainz Fire Department responded with personnel from both stations, totaling 17 firefighters. Foam was also used to extinguish the fire.
Since it could not initially be ruled out that asbestos was present in the shed, the emergency personnel worked under special protective measures. The fire was quickly extinguished; no one was injured.
In addition to the fire department, the lower water authority, the criminal investigation unit, and a police patrol were on site to provide support and investigate the cause of the fire.
The operation lasted from 9:30 a.m. to around 12:00 p.m., or about two and a half hours.
