08.10.2024 - First responders rescue a seriously injured person from a burning car after a traffic accident. A total of 5 seriously injured.
This morning at 10:05 a.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to a traffic accident on Saarstraße heading out of town, at the Mainz-Gonsenheim exit.
Upon arrival, the emergency responders received an excellent briefing on the situation from the first responders already on the scene. A Peugeot carrying five male passengers had veered off the road for reasons as yet unknown and collided with a tree. As a result of the accident, the vehicle came to rest on its side and caught fire.
Four of the occupants were able to free themselves from the burning vehicle, while a seriously injured occupant was rescued from the back seat by two first responders. These individuals had previously attempted unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher.
Immediately upon arriving at the scene of the accident, the fire department initiated comprehensive first aid and began fighting the fire. The police completely closed Saarstraße, which leads out of the city. Three of the occupants were seriously injured, and two were in life-threatening condition.
In addition to the fire department with 16 personnel, the emergency medical services with the health sector command, the Christoph 77 rescue helicopter, the police, and the environmental agency were also on the scene.
The fire department highly commends the two first responders who rescued an injured person from the burning car, thereby likely saving their life. It is important to note that one must not put oneself in danger in the process. One of the first responders was able to correctly assess the situation thanks to his training with the volunteer fire department.
09.10.2024 - Car in the track bed causes temporary traffic chaos
This afternoon, around 5:00 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department, along with the police and emergency medical services, was called to an unusual incident in the area of Wormser Straße. For reasons that are still unclear, a car veered off the road and slid into the adjacent Deutsche Bahn railbed.
After the emergency call was received by the fire department dispatch center, the Mz-Römisches Theater to Mz-Weisenau railway line was immediately closed, and emergency responders were alerted. The Deutsche Bahn emergency manager was also dispatched to the scene. The situation was confirmed upon arrival. Fortunately, both occupants were able to free themselves from the car, and there was no train on the tracks at the time of the accident. Thanks to dedicated first responders, the driver and passenger were cared for in an exemplary manner until the arrival of emergency medical services. Both remained uninjured.
The fire department secured the scene against oncoming traffic. Subsequent measures were then coordinated with Deutsche Bahn’s emergency manager. Due to the track closure, recovering the vehicle was a high priority to avoid unnecessarily increasing economic losses and train service disruptions. The fire department was therefore tasked with recovering the vehicle. The vehicle was pulled from the track bed using mechanical pulling equipment (a winch), allowing the railway line to be reopened to train traffic. For the duration of these operations, Wormser Straße was temporarily closed to all traffic, leading to disruptions in private vehicle traffic and in the scheduled services of Mainzer Mobilität.
In addition to the Mainz Professional Fire Department with 10 personnel, the emergency medical services, the state and federal police, and the Deutsche Bahn emergency manager were on the scene. A total of 17 personnel were active at the site.
15.10.2024 - Fire on balcony - Spread to other apartments prevented
The Mainz Fire Department was alerted to a fire in an apartment building at 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday. When the initial report came in, it was unclear whether anyone was still inside the affected apartment, prompting both fire stations to dispatch an increased number of personnel.
For unknown reasons, a fire had broken out at the rear of the apartment building in the area of the ground-floor balcony. The fire had already spread to the balconies above and the adjacent apartment.
Simultaneously, firefighting operations were conducted from both the outside and the inside. Thanks to the targeted intervention from two sides, the fire was quickly extinguished. This prevented the fire from spreading to other apartments.
All residents had already evacuated the building in an exemplary manner before the fire department arrived, so there were no injuries as a result of the fire.
The Mainz Fire Department deployed a total of 19 professional firefighters. The fire department’s efforts were actively supported by police and emergency medical services personnel.
The operation was completed after approximately one hour. The affected apartment is temporarily uninhabitable. The police have taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire.
18.10.2024 - Mainz-Finthen: Vehicle on fire
At 2:22 p.m., units from the professional and volunteer fire departments were dispatched to a vehicle fire in Mainz-Finthen. Even while en route, the emergency crews could see a distinct column of smoke rising above the town center. Upon arrival, the vehicle was already fully engulfed in flames. Due to the proximity to adjacent buildings, the dispatch center upgraded the alarm code to a building fire as a precaution, which automatically alerted additional units. The firefighters extinguished the vehicle and inspected the surrounding buildings. Fortunately, the fire was prevented from spreading to buildings; only the fence surrounding a property was damaged by the flames. The cause of the fire remains unclear. The four occupants of the vehicle were able to escape unharmed. Responding units included Fire Stations 1 and 2, the Mainz-Finthen Volunteer Fire Department, emergency medical services, and the police.

20.10.2024 - Car in the Rhine triggers major water rescue operation
At 4:29 p.m., units from the Mainz Fire Department, as well as fire departments from neighboring municipalities and other emergency response organizations, were dispatched to a water rescue near the NATO ramp in Mainz-Laubenheim.
While en route, the responding teams were informed that a vehicle was believed to be in the Rhine. Upon arrival, the person who reported the incident met the emergency crews and led them to the location in question. The person reported that the vehicle had first been spotted there earlier that morning.
The incident commander decided to deploy rescue divers from the Mainz Professional Fire Department to investigate the vehicle underwater. At the same time, the number of responding units was reduced. To support the diving operation, a multi-purpose boat from the Mainz Fire Department, along with one each from the Bodenheim and Ginsheim-Gustavsburg Fire Departments, remained on site. Furthermore, a warning was issued to commercial shipping via the district control center.
Fortunately, no persons were found inside the vehicle in question. To prevent the vehicle from drifting further and posing a hazard to navigation, the fire department divers secured it in place. The scene was subsequently handed over to the Water Police.
How the vehicle ended up in the Rhine and who the owner is are now the subject of a police investigation.
The operation was concluded around 6:50 p.m. A total of approximately 40 personnel from the Mainz Fire Department were involved, including members of the professional and volunteer fire departments, the Bodenheim-Nackenheim Fire Department, the Ginsheim-Gustavsburg Fire Department, the emergency medical services, and the police.
22.10.2024 - Preliminary report: Apartment fire with personal rescue
The Mainz Fire Department is currently responding to an incident on Flachsmarktstraße. At least one person has been injured in the fire. A rescue helicopter is en route to the scene.
23.10.2024 - Apartment fire with human rescue in the old town of Mainz
On Tuesday evening at 9:30 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to an apartment fire in the Old Town. Emergency responders immediately deployed with several vehicles, including both professional fire stations and the city’s volunteer fire department. The police and emergency medical services were also on the scene with multiple units.
Upon arrival, several teams wearing self-contained breathing apparatus were immediately sent into the building to rescue people and fight the fire. One person was found in the heavily smoke-filled apartment, quickly rescued, and handed over to the emergency medical services. This person received medical treatment on site and was subsequently taken to the hospital.
In parallel with the rescue efforts, additional emergency personnel began mop-up operations to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring apartments. Thanks to the swift and coordinated response of all involved personnel, the fire was quickly brought under control.
The police have taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire and secured the scene. After the firefighting operations were completed and a thorough inspection of the neighboring apartments was conducted, the scene was handed over to the police and the residents of the unaffected apartments around 11:45 p.m.
The Mainz Fire Department would like to thank all responding personnel for their swift and professional response, as well as the residents for their quick actions and understanding during the rescue operations.
23.10.2024 - Supplementary report on: Apartment fire with human rescue in the old town of Mainz
In addition to the press release issued at 1:38 a.m. (https://www.presseportal.de/blaulicht/pm/171463/5892868), we would like to report the following:
The report of the fire on Flachsmarktstraße came from neighbors who heard a woman’s cries for help on the 4th floor and detected the smell of smoke. Thanks to the coordinated rescue efforts of several teams working simultaneously, the fire department was able to rescue the woman from a burning room just 12 minutes after the emergency call. She was transported by rescue helicopter to a specialized hospital with life-threatening burn injuries.
The fire in one room of the apartment was extinguished after 20 minutes. No other apartments or people were affected. The apartment where the fire occurred is uninhabitable until further notice. The fire department cannot provide any information regarding the cause of the fire. The police are investigating this matter.
A total of 33 personnel from the professional fire department and the Mainz City Volunteer Fire Department, as well as emergency medical services and the police, were on the scene. Due to the high number of personnel deployed, the Bretzenheim Volunteer Fire Department was placed on standby. This measure paid off when, at 10:20 p.m., a beeping residential smoke alarm was reported in a high-rise apartment building in Weisenau. Objects were burning in a kitchen there. The fire was quickly extinguished. No one was in the apartment.
Both incidents demonstrate that smoke alarms and attentive neighbors save lives and prevent major fires.
24.10.2024 - +++ Current deployment of the Mainz fire department: Smoke developing on the grounds of the university hospital +++
The Mainz Fire Department is currently responding to an incident on the grounds of the University Hospital. A fire broke out in a utility shaft of a building, causing visible smoke. No one was injured. The situation is under control.
The fire department’s press officer is on site.
25.10.2024 - Fire on the grounds of the university hospital causes heavy smoke development and four-hour operation
A fire in a utility corridor on the grounds of Mainz University Medical Center triggered a four-hour large-scale operation late Thursday night into Friday, with fire departments from Ingelheim and Frankfurt am Main also arriving to assist. No one was injured. Hospital operations were not disrupted.
At around 9:45 p.m., the automatic fire alarm system alerted the Mainz Fire Department. Upon arrival, the fire crew observed thick smoke billowing from a ventilation shaft. As the incident was escalated, additional personnel from the professional fire department, as well as the volunteer fire departments of Bretzenheim and Finthen, were called to the scene.
While investigating the cause, the fire department determined that an underground utility tunnel connecting the buildings on the hospital grounds was heavily filled with smoke over long stretches. Thanks to closed fire doors, the spread of smoke was largely confined to the utility tunnel. Individual basement areas of the hospital buildings were protected with fans, allowing hospital operations to continue uninterrupted.
Burning objects in the utility tunnel were extinguished after an hour. Clearing the smoke from the utility tunnel was particularly challenging. For one thing, there are no windows underground; for another, the ventilation had to be carefully planned. Targeted ventilation ensured that the smoke was not forced into hospital buildings or unaffected areas. All measures were closely coordinated with the University Hospital’s emergency management team.
Additional and specialized fans were required for this work. To support the smoke extraction, large fans from the Ingelheim Fire Department were deployed. Additionally, the Frankfurt Fire Department provided a remote-controlled large fan on tracks that could enter the supply corridor and push the smoke outdoors.
A total of ten teams (two people each) wearing breathing apparatus were deployed for the firefighting and ventilation operations. Approximately 60 emergency personnel were on site. Fortunately, no one was injured during the operation. Hospital operations were also able to continue uninterrupted and without evacuations. After four hours, the fire department’s operation was concluded. The police have taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire.
Thanks to the automatic fire alarm system, the fire—which had gone unnoticed until then—was extinguished before flames and smoke could endanger patients or staff. During the large-scale operation, the professional fire department’s stations were staffed by the volunteer fire departments of Marienborn, Mombach, and Mainz-Stadt.
25.10.2024 - After a single-vehicle accident on Saarstraße: fire department frees cab driver
On Friday morning, a single-vehicle accident occurred on Saarstraße in Mainz, requiring the response of the fire department, emergency medical services, and police. A taxi had crashed without any external influence. While the taxi driver had to be rescued by the fire department, the three passengers were uninjured.
At 9:30 a.m., the Mainz Fire Department was dispatched to Saarstraße, heading out of town. Between the Koblenzer Straße exit and the Europakreisel roundabout, a taxi had crashed into the left guardrail and come to a stop there. Since the driver was trapped and injured, the fire department was called to the scene.
It quickly became clear that the taxi driver had suffered a medical emergency while driving, causing him to temporarily lose consciousness and control of the vehicle. By the time the fire department arrived, he had regained consciousness and received initial medical care from the emergency medical services. Fortunately, his passengers—three elderly women—remained uninjured and were attended to in the left lane by a first responder and the fire department.
The fire department carefully and quickly freed the driver through the rear of the vehicle. After receiving further treatment from the emergency physician, he was taken to a hospital. The three passengers waited patiently, well-supplied with blankets and kept company by the firefighters, for their journey to continue in a new taxi.
The accident scene was cleared within 45 minutes. The taxi sustained minor damage from the collision. Traffic was diverted to the shoulder during the rescue operations. There were no traffic delays. The response involved 23 personnel from the professional fire department and the Drais Volunteer Fire Department, as well as an ambulance, the emergency physician, and the police.
25.10.2024 - Serious traffic accident on the A60: four injured and massive traffic obstructions
A serious rear-end collision involving three cars caused major traffic disruptions on Friday on the A60 and in Mainz. The A60 heading toward Bingen was completely closed for about 90 minutes. Four people were injured and taken to the hospital.
Around 2:20 p.m., a vehicle’s automatic emergency call system, known as an E-Call, reported a serious traffic accident on the A60 between the Lerchenberg and Finthen interchanges. As a result, the professional fire department and the Bretzenheim Volunteer Fire Department were alerted.
While en route through the only partially formed emergency lane, additional callers informed the emergency dispatch center that three cars had been involved in an accident and one was believed to be on fire. Although the report of a burning car was not confirmed, it appeared that a BMW had rear-ended a van at high speed, which in turn was pushed into the rear of another car. Two vehicles were left severely damaged and blocking the roadway.
The four occupants, aged 21 to 64, received initial medical care from the crew of an ambulance that happened to be passing by and from the fire department. Additional ambulances and an emergency physician were called in. The fire department disconnected the batteries of the damaged vehicles and absorbed spilled fluids to prevent further hazards.
The roadway had to be completely closed until shortly before 4 p.m. due to the accident vehicles blocking the way. All four people involved were taken to hospitals in Mainz with injuries. Their lives are not in danger. The fire department was on the scene with five vehicles and 28 personnel. The emergency medical services were on site with an emergency physician, four ambulances, and one emergency vehicle.
The full closure not only caused a traffic jam about 5 km long in the direction of Bingen and on the bypass routes in Mainz. Traffic also backed up on the opposite lane due to many onlookers, some of whom slowed down to a crawl to get a look at the crashed vehicles. This behavior is extremely dangerous, and the fire department has absolutely no understanding for it.
