Water withdrawal from bodies of water in the Mainz metropolitan area will be prohibited starting June 27
To protect water bodies, the state capital of Mainz will issue a general order effective June 27, 2026, prohibiting the withdrawal of water from third-order water bodies within the city limits. The ban expressly applies to the extraction of water using manual scooping devices such as buckets or watering cans as well.
The reason for this measure is the ongoing drought and the resulting low water levels, which threaten the ecological functioning of the water bodies and the habitats of numerous animal and plant species.
The state capital of Mainz asks its citizens for their understanding and for them to use water responsibly. Violations of the general order constitute an administrative offense and may be punishable by a fine.
