Biodiversity Week in Mainz

Detail of the advertising poster

Mainz is buzzing, blooming and fluttering - because from May 20 to 31, 2026, everything in the state capital will revolve around perhaps the most important topic of our time: biodiversity.

The goal of the action week: to inspire people about the invaluable value of biodiversity—and to show them that everyone can make a difference. Whether on the balcony, in the garden, or right in the heart of the city.

For the second time, Mainz will serve as a stage for nature and civic engagement during this action week. In numerous neighborhoods, exciting events centered on the conservation and promotion of biodiversity invite people to get involved. Whether through guided tours, workshops, excursions, readings, or artistic activities—citizens of all ages can experience the diversity of local nature up close and rediscover ecological connections.

Janina Steinkrüger, Head of the Environmental Department:
“The consequences of the extinction of animal and plant species are often not apparent at first glance. As a result, the immense scale of the biodiversity crisis is unfortunately often underestimated. This makes it all the more important that we realize that the ongoing loss of biodiversity is primarily caused by our way of life and affects us all. Depleted soils and overfished oceans, for example, are already threatening the security of food production today. Nature conservation is particularly important in cities, as biodiversity in urban areas can be higher than in heavily farmed surrounding regions. Biodiversity Week draws our attention positively to the topic of biodiversity, and I thank all stakeholders for their commitment to our environment.”

The diverse program of events consists of over 40 activities—register now!

New: Children's campaign - painting competition

For the first time ever, there will be a drawing and creativity contest for children! Starting now and running through May 24, 2026, all children and teens between the ages of 4 and 14 are invited to get creative under the theme “My Favorite Animal or Plant from Mainz.” The task includes writing a short sentence (or, for young children, a single word) on their picture: “My animal is called … and lives in/at …”

The drawings can be submitted at the service desk of the Anna-Seghers Library during opening hours until May 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., or created on-site at the drawing table.

Starting May 24, 2026, the drawings will be on display at Ober Olmer Wald until May 30, 2026, and will be rated by visitors.

In addition, a digital biodiversity quiz for children, teens, and adults will be freely available throughout the entire period. You can easily test your knowledge of biodiversity via a link. The link to the quiz will be published before the campaign week begins.
