Discoveries in Gonsenheim
Another discovery in our series takes us to Mainz-Gonsenheim.
The "Rheinhessendom" can be seen from afar: the Catholic St. Stephen's Church with its twin towers is an eye-catcher amid small houses and gardens when you look at Gonsenheim from the surrounding fields. Fruit and vegetable growing has been a tradition here for centuries. Early summer is harvest time for sweet red fruits – and the Strawberry Festival is a particularly busy time.
In general, this large district of Mainz is easy to explore by bike. On foot, we recommend walks in individual areas, such as through the historic center and along paved paths through the idyllic Gonsbach Valley. Coming from Finthen, it flows through the town and on towards Mombach. For over ten years now, the stream has been able to flow in a natural bed again, surrounded by native tree species and fresh green meadows.
The landscape just a few kilometers away as the crow flies, in the steppe-like Mainz Sand, has a completely different, more Mediterranean feel. Whether you prefer a leisurely stroll or a jog, the neighboring Lenneberg Forest is also a great place to combine exercise in the fresh air with relaxation in nature. The trails there are correspondingly popular, especially on sunny weekends.
