District portrait
For its 2000th anniversary in 1962, the city of Mainz received a very special gift: a new district. The so-called "Jubilee Settlement" significantly alleviated the city's pressing housing problem, especially for young families, which had been ongoing since the end of the war. Just five years later, the first residents moved into the district, which had been named "Mainz-Lerchenberg" following a competition among the people of Mainz to come up with ideas.
Nestled between Ober-Olmer Forest and Draiser Senke, Mainz-Lerchenberg lies high above the city. Its proximity to the Rhine-Hesse countryside on the one hand and to the city center and highway on the other makes Lerchenberg particularly attractive to its residents.
Over the decades, a small town of its own has developed here—with Catholic and Protestant churches, a community center, elementary school, secondary school, four daycare centers, a post office, police station, diverse restaurants, and a shopping center. Row houses in the south, bungalows in the north of the district, and high-rise buildings in central Lerchenberg characterize the architectural cityscape.
Large parts of Lerchenberg still bear witness to the fact that the district was once built in the middle of the forest. Not only does the Ober-Olmer-Wald recreation area in the immediate vicinity invite visitors to go hiking, but Mainz-Lerchenberg itself is also remarkably green and enjoys a fresh climate thanks to the nearby forest.
Extensive sports fields and indoor sports facilities serve a lively club life. An attractive feature is the 10-field trampoline facility at the Lerchenberg Sports Club's sports complex.
Despite the good infrastructure, contact with the "outside world" has not been lost thanks to the excellent transport links. And, of course, thanks to the ZDF broadcasting center in the east of Mainz-Lerchenberg. Every day, Europe's largest television company broadcasts from here to households across Germany. So it's no wonder that when people hear Mainz-Lerchenberg, they immediately think of ZDF. After all, the broadcaster's large site with its famous rotunda and "Platz der Köpfe" (Square of Heads) is the trademark of Lerchenberg, and ZDF is one of the largest employers in the area.
More than 50 years have passed since the first sod was turned on Lerchenberg. Today, around 6,300 people live here. Many of them have been residents of Lerchenberg since the very beginning. But newcomers also quickly settle into this urban yet green district. And they appreciate the good mix of distance and proximity to the city of Mainz.
