In 2002, the city planning office was given responsibility for public lighting (street lighting). Since then, there has been intensive discussion of the topic of lighting. 

The City Planning Office deals with the planning and design aspects of lighting. The Mainzer Stadtwerke AG continues to be responsible for the structural implementation and technical issues.

The Urban Planning Office's responsibilities include the development of lighting concepts, the coordination of individual lighting projects, location decisions, and the examination of medium to long-term cost reductions.
