The main focus of the 57 field staff, who are immediately recognizable to all road users and passers-by thanks to their blue uniforms (47 staff for stationary traffic, 6 of whom are part-time and 41 full-time, and 10 full-time staff for speed monitoring), is on stationary traffic, on the one hand in the area of hazard prevention, for example by checking fire brigade access routes, disabled parking spaces, no-stopping zones, and restricted areas.
On the other hand, traffic enforcement officers (VüKs) also help to clear pedestrian zones of illegally parked vehicles and prevent long-term parking in short-term parking spaces, which should be available to everyone. In the event of violations, they intervene by issuing warnings or, if necessary, by towing vehicles.
Another area of responsibility for the traffic monitoring office is the monitoring of moving traffic. For this purpose, specially trained traffic monitoring officers carry out speed measurements throughout the entire area of the state capital of Mainz. Traffic accident prevention is the primary goal of speed monitoring. Speed monitoring is intended to prevent accidents, mitigate the consequences of accidents, and limit harmful environmental impacts. In addition, increasing the objective and subjective probability of detection is intended to motivate road users to behave in a manner that is appropriate and considerate in traffic.
