You may apply for an extension of your residence permit if you do not yet meet the requirements for enrollment in a full-time program or for completing a part-time program, but can achieve this goal within a reasonable period of time.

When deciding on the extension of your residence permit, the Foreigners’ Registration Office may request and consider statements from the university or other institutions authorized to provide education or training regarding the following points:

• Admission requirements
• Academic progress
• Degree completion
• Other academic matters

The extension of your residence permit is again temporary.

If you are under 18, your legal guardians must consent to your continued stay in Germany.

As a rule, the residence permit cannot be extended if the Foreigners’ Registration Office has already ruled this out when issuing the permit or during the most recent extension.

With the residence permit, you may work up to 140 days per year. You may also engage in part-time student work without restriction.

• You are not entitled to a residence permit. The decision to grant a residence permit is at the discretion of the Immigration Office.
• Please ensure that your information is accurate and complete so that your application can be processed without delay.

• Appeal against the decision of the immigration authority within one month of notification
• Action before the court specified in the notice of objection if the objection is not upheld

  Validity: 1–2 years. The residence permit will be extended for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years. If you are participating in a European Union or multilateral program with mobility measures, such as the European Union’s ERASMUS+ program, or if an agreement between two or more higher education institutions applies to you, the residence permit will be extended for at least 2 years. If your studies last less than 2 years, the residence permit will be extended for the duration of your studies.
• Application Deadline: 6–8 Weeks
  You should apply for the extension of your residence permit before your current residence permit expires. Your application should be received by the Foreigners’ Registration Office no later than six to eight weeks before the residence permit expires.

The immigration office responsible for the applicant's place of residence is responsible for processing the application.

In certain cases, fee reductions or waivers may be available.

  For an additional stay of up to three months for minor applicants
