If you would like to reserve your license plate afterward, we recommend that you deregister the vehicle at the registration office that issued the license plate. The reservation can be made either for the deregistered vehicle (if you wish to re-register it at a later date) or for you as the owner of the vehicle.

You can take your license plate with you if you wish when you change your place of residence. If you deregister the vehicle after changing your place of residence, your entitlement to the license plate expires. It is then no longer possible to reserve it.

You can apply to take the vehicle out of service at the registration office or online. For the online application, you will need the new stamp stickers and the registration certificate Part I. You can pay the applicable fees via the ePayment system.

Procedure

We will invalidate the vehicle's license plates and enter the date of decommissioning in the registration certificate Part I (vehicle registration document).

You can apply to decommission a vehicle anywhere in Germany. However, please note that we can only process "foreign" license plates in Mainz if all documents are complete. Otherwise, please contact the registration authority where the vehicle is registered.
