Laubenheimer Ried
Discover the natural paradise of the Laubenheimer Ried, a piece of nature in the state capital of Mainz. A meadow landscape that invites you to linger in the countryside.
There is a special natural oasis to discover in the old wine-growing village of Laubenheim: the lower zone of the Laubenheim floodplain stretches along the 400-meter-wide Rhine as part of a strip of floodplain and reed beds that accompanies the river. Like the village center, this lies five meters below the level of the Rhine.
The marshland and numerous ditches are ideal for lush flora and fauna. Flood channels that emerged from old branches of the Rhine, brick ponds created by clay extraction, a pond designed for nature conservation, wet hollows, as well as dams and ditches characterize the characteristic image of the floodplain today.
To the west, the marsh is bordered by the slopes of the Rheinhessen Plateau, which includes the town’s highest point, the Laubenheimer Höhe (196 meters). In the Laubenheimer Ried Nature Reserve, the peaceful atmosphere is particularly appealing to walkers. There are also designated horseback riding trails here. From the trails, many waterfowl can be observed year-round. A special highlight in the spring is the storks nesting on power poles. Additional information can be found on the information boards at the entrances.
