Designing the city center

Mainz has a special quality of life: conviviality, down-to-earthness, openness and warmth. You can experience it anew every day, especially in the city center. Various studies are being conducted and brochures published to strengthen and further develop the city center.

City center monitoring

Mainz city center monitoring provides information on the development of industries, vacancies, and new retail spaces in Mainz city center. Changes are thus observed and evaluated so that appropriate and timely action can be taken if necessary. The survey is conducted annually in July/August. The current report can be found below under "Further information."

Urban development studies

The establishment of retail outlets requires careful planning and consideration of urban planning conditions. On behalf of the Office for Urban Research and Sustainable Urban Development, well-founded studies are regularly conducted on this topic, including the center concept for the city of Mainz. The integrated development concept
for the city center is also relevant for the attractive and future-oriented design of Mainz's city center.

An overview of current surveys and concepts can be found below.

Shopping in Mainz

Mainz city center combines shopping, joie de vivre, and urban charm. The lively weekly market attracts visitors with fresh, regional delicacies—a meeting place that is known far beyond the city limits. Here you can experience the Rhine-Hessian way of life to the fullest, with Weck, Worscht, and Woi in the heart of the city.
The mix of unique, owner-operated shops and well-known brands makes for a varied and exciting shopping experience. Promenade streets, inviting squares, and cozy cafés ensure that Mainz remains a place where people like to linger and enjoy themselves
. The economic development agency actively supports this development through city center projects, networks, and location consulting.
