"Kreuzer Mainz" memorial

The memorial, which is also known as a naval memorial, commemorates the sinking of the S. M. S. Kleiner Kreuzer "Mainz".

Kreuzer Mainz Memorial

The ship, christened in 1909 and named after the city of Mainz, sank on August 28, 1914, at the beginning of World War I, in a naval battle with British warships off Heligoland. Shortly before, it had mined an English harbor. When the cruiser sank, 163 crew members lost their lives.

The memorial was erected in 1939 to mark the 25th anniversary of the cruiser's sinking and the 50th anniversary of the Mainz Naval Comradeship. It was financed by donations. Instead of the official inauguration ceremony on August 27, which was presumably canceled due to preparations for war, an inauguration was held by the Naval Comradeship. Five days later, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, thus starting World War II.
