03.02.2025 - Traffic accident on the L425 near Mainz - One person injured
A single-vehicle accident occurred on the L425 near Mainz during the night from Sunday to Monday. A passenger car veered off the road and crashed into a tree. Fortunately, the driver sustained only minor injuries.
On February 3, 2025, at 2:22 a.m., the Mainz Professional Fire Department and the Mainz-Ebersheim Volunteer Fire Department were called to a traffic accident on the L425 between Hechtsheim and Ebersheim. When the first responders arrived, the driver had already managed to exit the heavily damaged car on his own. The fire department provided first aid to the driver until the ambulance arrived. Additionally, fire safety measures were implemented and the scene was illuminated.
After the ambulance service arrived, the driver received further treatment in the ambulance and was subsequently transported to a hospital in Mainz.
The Mainz Professional Fire Department and Volunteer Fire Department were on the scene with a total of 16 personnel, along with the emergency medical services and the police, each with two personnel.

03.02.2025 - Emergency call failure in Rheinhessen due to technical defect
Shortly before 8 p.m. on Monday evening, dispatchers at the Mainz Fire Department control center noticed that the telephone system for the control center serving Mainz and the districts of Alzey-Worms and Mainz-Bingen had failed. Upon assessing the impact, they determined that the 112 emergency number was no longer accessible.
Together with the duty operations team, immediate measures were taken to ensure that emergency assistance could still be provided as quickly as possible: A public warning was issued for the entire area, including a cell broadcast. This ensured that there would be no delays in life-threatening emergencies. In addition, the fire department dispatch centers in both districts were staffed to ensure radio communication was available at all times.
After a few minutes, Telekom’s emergency control center succeeded in rerouting 112 calls to other emergency dispatch centers, which were in contact with the fire department control center in Mainz via radio and mobile phones and prepared for the increased volume of emergency calls.
During the outage, a fire alarm was reported in Mainz-Hechtsheim, which was relayed via the 110 emergency line in accordance with the police public warning. This allowed a fire engine from the professional fire department and the Hechtsheim Volunteer Fire Department to be alerted immediately. The call turned out to be a false alarm.
After about an hour, the fire department control center was able to resume normal operations. Prior to this, all technical components had been restarted and checked to ensure they were functioning properly. The public alert was lifted at 8:40 p.m.
Criticism must be directed at the behavior of many citizens who did not follow the instructions to dial 110 only in an emergency. Both the police and the emergency dispatch center recorded several dozen calls to the emergency number inquiring about the cause, even though there was no emergency. This unnecessarily ties up lines.
The fire department strongly emphasizes that instructions issued in warnings must be strictly followed. The emergency line is not an information service but is intended solely for urgent emergencies.
The exact cause of the technical failure is still being investigated. This incident underscores the efforts to upgrade the technology at the Mainz Professional Fire Department’s control center shortly, as the control center’s old components have reached the end of their service life and have become prone to failure.
08.02.2025 - Unmaneuverable pleasure craft on the Rhine - skipper acts correctly
The Mainz Fire Department was alerted to a recreational boating accident on the Rhine on Saturday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. At the time of the initial report, it was unclear how many people were involved or whether anyone was in the water. The Mainz control center immediately dispatched an increased response team consisting of firefighters, emergency medical services, and the German Life Saving Association (DLRG).
Upon arrival at the scene, fortunately, no people were found in the water and no capsized boat was detected. During further reconnaissance, the fire department’s multi-purpose boat located a recreational boat with three people on board, which was unable to maneuver, near the shore of the Petersaue.
The pleasure boat’s engine had failed due to a technical malfunction. The people on board acted immediately, prudently, and correctly. Using paddles, they maneuvered themselves out of the navigation channel toward the nearest shore to safety. Fortunately, none of the people were in the water at any time, and all were properly equipped with life jackets.
The fire department’s boat crew secured the recreational boat and subsequently towed it to the nearby customs port.
The Mainz Fire Department deployed a total of 14 professional firefighters. The volunteer fire departments and the DLRG (German Life Saving Association) that had been alerted were able to cancel their response. The fire department’s efforts were supported by the water police and emergency medical services. The operation was concluded after approximately 30 minutes.
10.02.2025 - Serious traffic accident on the BAB 643 Mainz junction in the transition to the A60 in the direction of Darmstadt
A serious traffic accident occurred during the night from Sunday to Monday on the BAB 643 at the Mainz interchange, on the ramp leading to the A60 in the direction of Darmstadt. The driver of a passenger car lost control of the vehicle, which rolled over several times. One passenger was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. The second passenger was seriously injured and transported to a hospital by emergency medical services.
Suspecting that other people might have exited the vehicle, a police helicopter from Egelsbach was deployed to conduct a wide-area search of the area. The drone squad from the Bodenheim Fire Department was also alerted to the scene. Fortunately, the suspicion was not confirmed, and the individuals were found safe and sound at home by the police.
The operation involved 24 personnel from the Mainz Professional and Volunteer Fire Departments, the Health Division, several emergency vehicles from the ambulance service, the police, and the drone squad of the Bodenheim Volunteer Fire Department.
12.02.2025 - Traffic accident on the A60 leads to traffic delays during rush hour
The Mainz Fire Department was called to a traffic accident on the A60 between the Hechtsheim East and West interchanges this afternoon at 4:07 p.m. Since this area is heavily trafficked during rush hour, a traffic backup had already formed on the way to the scene.
Upon arrival, the fire department found a traffic accident involving three vehicles. The scene had already been secured by first responders. A total of four people were involved in the accident, including an injured woman who was taken to a hospital in Mainz by the ambulance service as a precaution.
The fire department secured the scene against oncoming traffic, disconnected the battery of the severely damaged vehicle belonging to the injured woman, and cleared debris from the highway. After a 45-minute operation, the scene was handed over to the highway patrol.
The Mainz Fire Department was on site with 17 personnel, the emergency medical services with four personnel, and the police with several personnel.
15.02.2025 - Operation on the A60: Puppy causes traffic accident
On Saturday morning at 10:40 a.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to a traffic accident on the A60 in the direction of Bingen, between the Lerchenberg and Finthen interchanges. Due to unclear emergency reports, a serious traffic accident was initially suspected—but upon arrival, a rather unusual cause became apparent: a young mixed-breed puppy had caused a commotion.
The driver of a car was traveling with her 3.5-month-old dog, "Cosmo," when the little pup suddenly felt ill and vomited heavily. Distracted by this, the driver lost control of her vehicle, which then crashed into the guardrail. The car was damaged so severely that it was no longer drivable.
Fortunately, both the driver and Cosmo were unharmed. The Mainz Fire Department secured the accident scene and took care not only of the driver but also of the agitated puppy. After a short calming break and plenty of attention, Cosmo was quickly back to normal.
The Mainz Fire Department points out that pets should always be securely fastened in the vehicle to avoid distractions while driving. Little Cosmo certainly didn’t expect his first big fire department call—but after this adventure, hopefully his next car ride will be a more relaxed one.
15.02.2025 - Smoke alarms and attentive neighbors save lives: Fire brigade rescues residents from smoke-filled apartment
On Saturday afternoon at 4:45 p.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to a suspected fire in an attic apartment on Kästrich Street. Several smoke detectors had gone off, prompting alert neighbors to call 911.
When the first responders from the Mainz Professional Fire Department arrived, the apartment was heavily filled with smoke. The caller provided the fire department with excellent directions. Since no one responded to knocking or ringing the doorbell, the door was forced open, and the apartment was immediately searched for people.
In the living room, the responders found the resident unconscious and immediately brought him outside. He regained consciousness during this process but had to be transported to a hospital by the emergency medical services due to smoke inhalation. The cause of the smoke was a fire that had just started due to cooking appliances left on in the kitchen. After extensive ventilation by the fire department, the apartment was once again habitable.
A total of about 30 firefighters and emergency medical personnel were on the scene for approximately one hour. The incident underscores the life-saving role of smoke detectors. Thanks to the attentive neighbors and the early alarm, a worse outcome was prevented.

19.02.2025 - Garage extension on fire
This Wednesday morning, around 10 a.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to respond to a fully engulfed fire in a garage extension located directly adjacent to a residential building.
A large cloud of smoke was already visible as they approached the scene, and several emergency calls were received. Fortunately, the residents had evacuated the building in time.
Two teams wearing self-contained breathing apparatus, each equipped with a C-nozzle, worked to extinguish the fire. Another team wearing self-contained breathing apparatus and using a nozzle successfully prevented the flames from spreading to an adjacent building.
A total of 20 firefighters from the professional fire department were on the scene. They were supported by three emergency medical service personnel and three police officers. The criminal investigation department has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
The affected house is currently uninhabitable. The three residents have found temporary accommodation with acquaintances. Thanks to the residents’ prompt alert and the fire department’s rapid response, the fire was prevented from spreading to neighboring buildings.
The mop-up operations were very extensive due to the structural conditions and lasted until 2:00 p.m. Thanks to officers on day shift, two additional fire trucks were manned to handle parallel operations.
21.02.2025 - A busy afternoon for the Mainz fire department
On Friday afternoon, the Mainz Fire Department responded to several calls within the city limits over the course of four hours.
Traffic accident between a bus and a car on Carl-Zeiss-Straße—based on the report, the Integrated Control Center dispatched an increased number of fire and rescue personnel at 2:55 p.m. A total of six people were in the vehicles involved in the accident, none of whom were injured, fortunately. After an initial assessment, the scene was handed over to the police.
Emergency door opening in Mainz’s Neustadt district – Residents alerted the fire department due to a resident’s prolonged absence. The fire department opened the apartment door without force but could only find the resident deceased.
Smoke-filled church in the Hartenberg/Münchfeld area – the fire department detected diffuse smoke throughout the entire church building and an elevated carbon monoxide concentration. Two large-capacity ventilators were deployed for nearly two hours. Construction work in the immediate vicinity likely caused the smoke.
Person at risk of falling in Bretzenheim – Around 5:00 p.m., passersby reported a person in a critical situation on the roof of a single-family home. Before the fire department arrived, the person managed to return to the building on their own.
Traffic accident on the A643 – Around 5:30 p.m., a traffic accident involving two vehicles occurred on the highway. Both drivers sustained moderate injuries but were able to exit their vehicles on their own. Transport by emergency medical services to nearby hospitals was necessary for further treatment. The fire department secured the accident scene against traffic and fire hazards. They also absorbed leaking fluids and disconnected the vehicles’ power sources.
In addition to the fire department, the emergency medical services and the police were also on the scene.
25.02.2025 - Fire brigade and disaster control continue proven concept for a safe Rose Monday in Mainz
Following the positive experience of last year, the central coordination of medical services will once again be handled by fire department and disaster management officials during the Mainz Rose Monday Parade and the subsequent party. This will again ensure the efficient use of resources and optimal care for visitors. In addition, the Mainz Fire Department will increase its presence throughout the city during the entire day of festivities.
Thanks to close cooperation between the organizations, medical personnel are deployed strategically, leading to faster medical care. This year, too, Rose Monday and its festivities represent a major operation:
- 40 Fußtrupps und 55 zusätzliche Rettungsfahrzeuge
- Betreuung an 10 Unfallhilfsstellen entlang des Zugweges
- Durchschnittlich über 500 medizinische Versorgungen bis
Mitternacht
- Gleichzeitige Behandlungskapazität in den Unfallhilfsstellen:
ca. 120 Personen
- Rund 5000 hauptsächlich ehrenamtliche Einsatzstunden
- Erwartet werden zwischen 300 und 400 medizinische NotfälleDuring the parade, the Mainz Fire Department will strategically position additional full-time and volunteer personnel with vehicles in the Old Town to ensure that even isolated areas can be reached as quickly as possible at any time.
As in the previous year, the more than 480 personnel from the fire department, disaster control, and medical services will be led by a joint operations command center, which can also respond quickly to unforeseen incidents. The proven “Rosenmontag Command Center” will be deployed once again, where all participating organizations will collaborate and centrally coordinate medical service operations.
To ensure a joyful and safe Rose Monday celebration, ASB Mainz-Bingen, DLRG Mainz, DRK Mainz-Bingen, the Mainz Fire Department, Johanniter Rheinhessen, Malteser Mainz, and the police are working closely together. 27.02.2025 - Serious traffic accident on the K12 between Mainz-Marienborn and Mainz-Lerchenberg
A serious traffic accident occurred today at around 12:20 p.m. on the K12 between Mainz-Marienborn and Mainz-Lerchenberg. A 33-year-old Mercedes driver veered off the road for unknown reasons, damaging a guardrail and a tree in the process. Since the accident was initially reported on the adjacent A63, the Nieder-Olm Fire Department, which has jurisdiction over the area, was alerted first. Upon arrival, the emergency responders determined that the accident had occurred on the K12 and proceeded to the scene.
Since the location falls within the jurisdiction of the city of Mainz, the Mainz control center subsequently alerted the incident command team at Fire Station 1. Upon arrival at the scene, the emergency responders found the driver slightly injured outside the severely mangled vehicle. He was immediately transported by the ambulance service to a hospital in Mainz.
As a result of the accident, a wheel rim from the vehicle was flung onto the adjacent railroad tracks, necessitating a brief closure of the tracks to recover the rim. The tree was so severely damaged that its root system was slightly lifted. An assessment by the Parks and Recreation Department determined that the tree must be cut down due to the extent of the damage.
The following were on the scene: the police, the emergency medical services, the railway emergency manager, the Parks and Recreation Department, the Mainz Professional Fire Department with two crews, and the Nieder-Olm Fire Department with six vehicles and 20 personnel. The operation was successfully concluded after approximately 1.5 hours thanks to the excellent cooperation of all parties involved.
