Book history
The Gutenberg Museum has a unique collection on the history of books, spanning seven centuries and tens of thousands of volumes. The holdings, which are catalogued and collected in the Gutenberg Library and partly included in the museum's exhibitions, impressively trace the development of the medium of books.
Over seven hundred years of book history
The collection comprises books dating from the 15th to the 21st century. Its centerpiece, two copies of the 42-line Gutenberg Bible from 1452-55, is complemented by more than 3,300 incunabula, which are among the most important in the world. Other areas of the collection reflect the rich variety of forms that the printed book has taken on throughout its history. These include press prints, artist's books, picture books, children's books, and an extensive collection of miniature books.
