You do not have your birth certificate, but you need it for a marriage or other official procedure, for example? Then you can apply for a birth certificate to be issued.
What do I need to know?
Service description
After birth, every child in Germany must be registered in the birth register. Once registered, you can also apply for a birth certificate to be issued. This certifies the birth of the child and contains details of the place and time of birth, as well as the first name and surname. It usually also contains details of the child's gender and parents.
You will need a birth certificate in various situations throughout your life. For use abroad, it can also be issued on a multilingual form. You can use this in many countries without translation.
You can have an (international) birth certificate issued at the registry office that registered your birth. In federal states where there is a central registry network, you can also obtain the birth certificate from any other registry office in that network.
Note on requesting certificates:
Under Online Services, you will find our online ordering and payment system for certificates from the birth register.
Alternatively, you can request certificates in writing or by fax. Please enclose a copy of your identity card or passport.
If you were born in Mainz or in one of the formerly independent suburbs of Bretzenheim, Drais, Ebersheim, Finthen, Gonsenheim, Hechtsheim, Laubenheim, Marienborn, Mombach, or Weisenau, you can request a birth certificate from the Registry Office, Legal Affairs Office, and Public Order Office of the state capital of Mainz.
For births that took place more than 110 years ago, you can obtain the certificates from the City Archives, Rheinallee 3b, 55116 Mainz, email: stadtarchivstadt.mainzde.
Prerequisites
Personal data in civil status registers is subject to data protection. Birth certificates can therefore only be issued
for persons to whom the entry refers
and their
spouses,
life partners (within the meaning of the Civil Partnership Act),
ancestors and descendants (such as parents or grandparents, as well as children and grandchildren),
siblings, if they can prove a legitimate interest.
Other persons, including close relatives such as aunts and uncles, will only receive a birth certificate if they can demonstrate a legal interest (examples: letter from the probate court, court judgment, or enforceable title).
Applicants must be at least 16 years old.
Remark
For presentation abroad, we can issue you with an international certificate or a multilingual extract from the birth register. Please tick the appropriate box on the application form.
Please note: Mainz-Amöneburg, Mainz-Kastel, and Mainz-Kostheim belong to the Wiesbaden registry office district.
