Digital technologies are playing an increasingly important role in the development of city centers.
The Digital City Center project is developing a strategy to determine how digital solutions can help enhance the appeal and sustainability of Mainz’s city center.
The goal is to identify the potential of digitalization and develop concrete measures. As part of a feasibility study, the potential for digital transformation is being examined, e.g.:
- digital services for visitors
- better integration of services
- digital information systems
- support for retail and restaurants
- Data-driven decision-making
Objective
During an initial joint kick-off workshop, stakeholders from the downtown area and residents of Mainz identified what is important to them when visiting downtown—particularly with a view to how digital solutions can further enhance the experience. It became clear that the focus is not on individual measures to improve the quality of the experience. The results of this workshop provide the basis for the feasibility study.
The feasibility study is intended to produce recommendations for action that will enable Mainz’s downtown area to further develop its existing potential for a digital downtown and remain an attractive destination for visitors, restaurants, and retailers in the future. As a supporting perspective, the study will also examine how municipal economic development initiatives can contribute to achieving this goal.
Project period
The project began in November 2025 with a kick-off workshop.
The feasibility study will be developed and completed by the end of September 2026.
