Inner city impulses: New perspectives for a vibrant inner city

With the "Innenstadt-Impulse" model project, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate is supporting cities in testing new ways of developing city centers. The aim is to further develop city centers as multifunctional, resilient and sustainable living spaces and to create new perspectives for use, design and cooperation.

New perspectives for a vibrant city center

Downtown areas are central hubs of public life. They bring together retail, dining, culture, housing, work, and social interaction within a compact space. At the same time, many downtown areas have been undergoing a fundamental transformation in recent years. Changes in the retail sector, the rise of online shopping, and shifting usage patterns are leading to changing demands on downtown areas.

Vacancies, shifting visitor patterns, and new expectations regarding the quality of the urban environment demonstrate that city centers must continue to evolve in order to remain vibrant places for social interaction, economic activity, and urban life in the future.

Through the “Inner City Impulses” pilot project, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate is supporting cities in testing new approaches to downtown development. The goal is to further develop downtown areas as multifunctional, resilient, and sustainable living spaces and to create new perspectives for use, design, and collaboration.

The state capital, Mainz, is receiving approximately 380,000 euros in funding for this purpose to implement model projects in collaboration with partners from government, business, academia, and the urban community.

Funding will be provided during the period 2025–2027. The municipality’s own contribution amounts to 10%.

Objective of the Model Project

As part of the “Inner City Impulse” initiative, projects are funded that test new approaches to inner-city development and demonstrate, through exemplary models, how city centers can be strengthened in the long term.

Funding is provided for the development of an AI application that brings the “Mainz feeling” to life digitally.
The application is designed to accompany visitors throughout the entire customer journey—from inspiration and information through planning and the visit itself to evaluation and recommendations.

The goal is to increase the visibility of offerings, locations, and activities in Mainz and to further develop digital information and communication processes. At the same time, the aim is to boost day tourism.
