Gutenberg monument
The Gutenberg monument, designed by Mainz artist Joseph Scholl, stands on Gutenbergplatz in Mainz in honor of Johannes Gutenberg.
Bronze statue of the inventor
Larger than life, he towers over the square that bears his name: Danish sculptor Berthel Thorvaldsen created the design for the bronze statue of Johannes Gutenberg. The monument, which was completely renovated in 2010, shows the inventor of printing, of whom there are no contemporary portraits, in an idealized representation: bearded, elegantly dressed, with a Bible and printing types in his hands.
The people of Mainz celebrated the inauguration of the monument in 1837 with a three-day festival. Even today, there is still a lot of activity around the monument on Gutenbergplatz—and not only on St. John's Eve, the festival in honor of the city's greatest son.
