CITY CYCLING 2026: Mainz Residents Cycle Their Way to New Records
A whopping 111 metric tons of CO₂ saved
This year’s STADTRADELN in Mainz came to a close with outstanding results. A total of 3,574 active cyclists in 176 teams covered an impressive 675,507 kilometers. This resulted in an estimated reduction of approximately 111 metric tons of CO₂. This set new records in Mainz since the start of STADTRADELN—both in terms of the number of participants and teams, as well as the kilometers covered and the calculated CO₂ savings.
Compared to the 569,121 kilometers cycled in 2025 by 3,396 participants, Mainz was able to increase the number of kilometers covered this year by an impressive 18 percent. This underscores the growing importance of the bicycle as an environmentally friendly mode of transportation in everyday life.
Janina Steinkrüger, Head of the Mobility Department, thanks all participants: “The record-breaking results from this year’s STADTRADELN show how many people in Mainz are willing to make their daily lives more climate-friendly. Never before have so many people participated—and never before have so many kilometers been covered in Mainz during STADTRADELN. Every single kilometer contributes to climate protection and makes it clear that cycling has long been an integral part of modern mobility in our city. I’m particularly pleased that we continue to reach new people who are (re)discovering cycling in Mainz through STADTRADELN.”
Once again, the high level of participation from companies, schools, clubs, and individuals was particularly encouraging. Together, they demonstrated that bicycles are used not only for leisure but also as a matter of course for commuting to work and school.
The team with the most kilometers cycled in 2026 is Team FIETS. With just 94 active cyclists, they covered an impressive 46,851 kilometers.
The team from the Gymnasium am Kurfürstlichen Schloss Mainz won in the “Schools” category with a total of 42,516 kilometers. The 465 cyclists also took second place overall among all teams!
The drawing for this year’s prize winners has already taken place. All participants who cycled at least 25 kilometers during the campaign period were automatically entered into the drawing. Some of the prizes will be presented at the awards ceremony on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the Kakadu Bar of the Staatstheater. As a highlight, the International Cycling Film Festival will also be on site to present exciting short films on the topic of cycling.
The state capital of Mainz would like to thank all participants as well as the numerous supporters of the campaign. Year after year, STADTRADELN makes an important contribution to raising the profile of cycling, strengthening climate protection, and further advancing sustainable mobility in Mainz.
