"City trees are true all-rounders: they improve our climate, provide habitat, and beautify the cityscape. However, caring for them requires expertise and commitment. With the 'Meenzer Stadtbäume' (Mainz City Trees) series of events, we want to raise awareness among citizens about the value and challenges of our city trees and give them an insight into the work of the Parks and Environment Department."
Janina Steinkrüger, Head of Parks and Environment

"Day of the Tree" on April 25, 2025

The series of events in the Volkspark kicked off with "Arbor Day." Information and activity stands were set up on the lawn between the water playground and the valley of perennials.

After a welcome speech by Janina Steinkrüger, Head of the Department of Green Spaces and Environment, interested visitors were able to visit the stands between 2 and 5 p.m.

At six stations, interested visitors were given insights into the topics of tree care, wood in landscaping, and the role of (urban) trees in climate change. The stations were varied and diverse. While some stations focused primarily on discussion, others offered an interactive program where visitors could build their own birdhouses and provide new habitats for birds in their own neighborhoods.

Three events entitled "City Trees and Tree Identification" were also offered as part of the Mainz Holiday Card, the summer holiday program for children.

The city park, with its wide variety of tree species, was the ideal location for the event. In addition to the diversity of tree species, the young researchers also explored the diversity of animals and plants in and around the trees.
