The department performs the duties of the lower monument protection authority within the building authority. It enforces the Monument Protection Act of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate in the area of the state capital Mainz.
Responsibilities:
- Advising monument owners
- Carrying out approval procedures under monument protection law
- General monitoring of measures relating to cultural monuments
- Monitoring the state of preservation of cultural monuments.
As part of the consultation process with the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, the department also consults with the municipality on entries and deletions in the informational register of cultural monuments in the state capital of Mainz. Since
2021, the department has been represented in the municipal management group of the SchUM World Heritage Site, which oversees measures relating to the Mainz World Heritage Site – the Old Jewish Cemetery on Mombacher Straße.
