The volunteer-run project group and the Office for Youth and Family plan and organize the OPEN OHR Festival. It is a political festival centered around a current theme. It always takes place over Pentecost at the Citadel in Mainz. The festival features music, theater, cabaret, film, light-hearted entertainment, and panel discussions on the theme. In addition, the staff organize and coordinate cultural events for children and youth, such as the Children’s Theater Festival, the Mainz Klepper Competition, and the band festival Grill ’em All.
During summer break, the Mainz Vacation Pass is available for children and youth from Mainz (ages 6 to 18). With the Vacation Pass, everyone can ride buses and trams in Mainz and Wiesbaden. The Vacation Pass offers great day trips and opportunities to get involved.
Children and youth are just as affected by many political decisions as adults. The Coordination Office for Child and Youth Participation supports young people in voicing their opinions and wishes and in helping to shape their city. To this end, various opportunities for participation are available to all interested parties, e.g., at the Youth Conference, in playground projects, and through “Youth Speaks for Itself” in the Youth Welfare Committee.
